During a personal appearance in Milwaukee on Friday, Packers Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins admitted that he’s enjoying the additional time he’s spent with his family during the lockout.
“A lot of guys like me are enjoying the extra time with their families, and we get to let our bodies heal,” Collins said according to WBAY-TV in Green Bay. “But you miss being out there with the guys and the coaches, so hopefully they will get a deal soon.”
While some, including attorneys for the NFL, might pounce on Collins’ words, it’s important to remember two things:
1.) Collins states that he wants to return to work soon, and 2.) the three-time Pro Bowler was one of the few 2010 restricted free agents to receive a contract extension last off-season.
Collins, 27, signed a three-year contract extension that included a $4 million signing bonus and $8.3 million in roster bonuses ($8 million on 3/17, $300K in per game bonuses) with a $1.35 million base salary in 2010. On the Packers’ 53-man roster for all 34 weeks of the 2009 and 2010 seasons, Collins is also eligible to receive up to $60,000 in payments from the NFLPA during the lockout.
The reality is the vast majority of NFL players are not in the same financial position that Collins is this off-season.
