Colts Re-Sign Offensive Weapon in Slew of Roster Moves
USA TODAY Sports

Through NFL rumors, the Indianapolis Colts have been connected to wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and Marquez Callaway in recent days.

Indianapolis didn't add either of those wideouts, but the Colts did announced Tuesday they re-added veteran receiver Juwann Winfree to the roster.

Winfree appeared in the first three games of this season for Indianapolis as a practice squad elevation. Although Indianapolis mostly used him on special teams, Winfree played 5 offensive snaps in Week 1.

But then on October 10, the Colts released Winfree.

The Colts are bringing back Winfree as one of the team's top receivers, Alec Pierce, is dealing with a shoulder injury. Pierce left during the fourth quarter of Week 6 due to his shoulder ailment.

Michael Pittman remains Indianapolis' top receiver, and rookie Josh Downs has performed well. But the Colts haven't received much production from their depth wideouts.

Other than Pittman, Downs and Pierce, the only other Colts with at least 40 receiving yards this season are running backs and tight ends.

Veteran wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie has 5 receptions for 39 yards. Amari Rodgers has yet to record a catch this season.

Winfree didn't have a reception for the Colts in three games, but he had a 17-yard catch while playing for the Green Bay Packers last season. In 2021, he registered 8 receptions for 58 yards.

To make room for Winfree on the active roster, the Colts moved center Jack Anderson back to the practice squad. The Colts also announced on Tuesday that they signed wide receivers Tyrie Cleveland and running back Zavier Scott to their practice squad.

In order to make space for those new practice squad signings, the Colts also released wide receivers Racey McMath and Anthony Miller, along with guard Dakota Shepley from the practice squad.

In addition to Winfree, Cleveland could be another option for the Colts receiving core if Pierce can't play in Week 7. Cleveland has recorded 8 catches for 91 yards in 23 career NFL games.
