The Indianapolis Colts said no to Kyle Orton. Obviously, with a 0-10 record, if they had put in a waiver claim for him, they would have gotten him. The reasoning behind such a move is easy to put together. Orton’s not really a guy you want to build a teams around – both the Chicago Bears and the Denver Broncos found that out. And he’ll be an unrestricted free agent after the season. Even under optimum circumstances, the addition of Orton this week would have cost the team $1.58 million and raise it from a likely 0-16 to perhaps 2-14, and he would probably walk after the season. But here’s the weird part. Pro Football Talk is reporting that the Colts attempted to acquire Orton before the season – remember that was when the team’s brass thought Peyton Manning would miss four to six weeks – despite his $7.379 million base salary. The plan was to let Orton start the season until Manning returned and if he won two or three games, the Colts would go to the playoffs as usual. But it didn’t happen.
