Commanders HC Ron Rivera responds to Chase Young's shot at former team

It didn’t take Chase Young long to fit in with his new San Francisco 49ers teammates after coming over in a trade-deadline acquisition last week.

While he likely was simply trying to be complementary of his new team’s recent success, which includes three playoff appearances, two NFC Championship Game appearances and one Super Bowl appearance over the last four years, Young stirred up a little controversy with what he said about his former team, the Washington Commanders.

"Just stepping in here for today, got in here last week, just the culture, the vibe is a lot different,” Young said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “I definitely know that I'm in the building with winners."

Young’s comments certainly rubbed some the wrong way, but as Commanders head coach Ron Rivera sees it, it’s much ado about nothing.

"I like the direction we're headed,” Rivera told reporters. “I think culturally it's a really solid place. … I do think that for the most part, things can be very bright for us if it continues to go in the right direction. As far as Chase is concerned and his comments, I really appreciate who he is for us and who he was for us. Did some nice things and just wish him all the luck in San Francisco."

Rivera wasn't the only one in the Commanders facility seemingly unbothered by what Young had to say. Tight end Logan Thomas also appeared to brush off Young's comments, reaffirming everyone in the locker room is pleased with the direction Washington is heading.

The Commanders didn’t do a whole lot of winning in Young’s three-plus seasons with the team, compiling a 25-32-1 record in 58 games (.431 win percentage). They made the playoffs just once, in 2020, the year Young won Defensive Rookie of the Year after logging 42, pressures, 30 hurries, 12.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, six QB hits, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Young now joins a 49ers team that has the fifth-most wins (47) over the last four years and is one of the favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.
