Could Fant's Success Force Howard Position Change?
USA TODAY Sports

Tytus Howard is on the verge of returning to the starting lineup Sunday afternoon for the Houston Texans' Week 5 contest against the Atlanta Falcons. But instead of returning to a horrific offensive line, Howard will improve a unit that hasn't given up a sack during the Texans' two-game winning streak.

Coach DeMeco Ryans has been happy with the offensive line's improved play. And at the forefront of their success has been George Fant, who has started in Howard's place during his four-game absence due to a broken hand.

"Fant has done a really good job," Ryans said. "[I] thought he’s been very consistent. He’s gotten better. Week in and week out, he’s gotten better, and I’m really pleased with what George has done. He’s been one of the guys who has been a staple for us up front, him and Shaq [Mason], and they’ve done a really good job on the right side."

Fant has quietly put together a good season. He has given up one sack and 10 pressures. According to Pro Football Focus, Fant has been the Texans' highest-graded lineman, with a pass-blocking grade of 71.0.

His best game came during the Texans' Week 3 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He only allowed one pressure, which resulted in rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud throwing for 280 yards and two touchdowns while completing a season-best 66.7 percent of his passes at TIAA Bank Stadium.

"I am here to play within my role and do whatever I need to do for the team," Fant said. "It's not like we don't have guys who can't play at this high level. If we did, they would not be here. I have belief in our offensive line."

With Howard returning, the Texans may consider keeping Fant at right tackle to avoid interfering with the production of the offensive line. During Wednesday's practice, the Texans had Howard lining up at left guard.

Howard could start in place of Kendrick Green, who is out indefinitely after tearing his meniscus Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"When it comes to who is out there, we’ll have the best guys out there who are available, and they’ll do their best," Ryans said. "Whatever we need, guys will be ready to go."
