During the 2007 off-season the Pittsburgh Steelers made a very tough decision when they cut their All-Pro outside linebacker Joey Porter. By cutting Porter the Steelers opened cap space and also put their faith in an inexperienced player. Porter’s back-up was James Harrison, who at that point had only started eight NFL games and had recorded only four sacks. However, the Steelers knew they needed the cap space so they cut Porter and went with the less experienced Harrison. During the 2007 season Porter played for the Miami Dolphins and Harrison outplayed him in nearly every statistical area as the Steelers new right outside linebacker. A year later in 2008 Harrison won the defensive player of the year award and Steelers fans had all-but forgotten about Porter. Now as the Steelers face many difficult decisions during the 2013 off-season they face another similar situation. Keenan Lewis is a budding star, but he is also an unrestricted free agent and the Steelers may not have enough cap space to sign him to a long-term deal. It used to be that the Steelers would let aging players go and turn things over to their young players who had been waiting in the wings. However, letting Lewis walk instead of cutting aging veterans would be a mistake. According to Richard Sherman, the Seattle Seahawks All-Pro corner, Lewis is one of the top corners in the game and in 2012 he played very well despite battling through a hip injury. Therefore, should the Steelers think about cutting Ike Taylor much as they did with Porter in 2007 and go with the less experienced player, who is just beginning his career over the player that may only have a few productive seasons left? It could make some sense, but it also would be a very tough decision to make; especially after Taylor was the top corner on a defense that ranked first against the pass for two straight seasons. This situation isn’t exactly the same as the one with Porter and Harrison during the 2007 off-season, but it’s still a fair question to ask. If the difference between signing and not signing Lewis is the same as the amount that would be saved by cutting Taylor do the ends justify the means? I would be hard pressed not to argue for keeping Lewis even if it meant losing Taylor. It would be hard to imagine many fans being happy with the loss of Taylor, but he is nearly 33 years old and Keenan Lewis is six years younger. There is no doubt that this will and would be a very difficult decision to make, but if the Steelers believe they have a future star in Lewis they may be willing to cut a veteran if it means keeping him. Other veterans that could be on their way out of Pittsburgh this off-season include linebacker James Harrison, guard Willie Colon, wide receiver Jerrico Cotchery, and defensive end Brett Keisel. • First it was a total different situation, the Steelers had quality replacements. Second this would be the dumbest thing the organization could do. The secondary fell apart in Ike Taylor's absence. I want Keenan Lewis gone! He cannot do what Ike can do! Lewis cost us wins last year. Tennessee he dropped an interception on the final drive, Dallas he got burnt by one handed Dez Bryant which tied the game at 24 a piece, and then against Cincinnati AJ Green beat him for the game winning field goal. Oh yeah, he finally won the starting cornerback position when there was lesser competition. I rest my case!
  • Lets be honest. Ike Holds and got Tebowed. He's not what he use to be and Keenan Lewis & Cortez Allen are the future. I'd Cut Ike to sign Keenan in a heartbeat or Cut Ikes pay in half to sign Keenan.

As far as getting burnt by AJ Green Leewis did the job he was suppose to and thats keeping him in front of him.
  • First of all you Lewis is not Ike, let that be clear! Lewis got torched by Kyle Orton in preseason, do you remember? I would much rather have Allen and Taylor. Lewis is not ready to cover Number one receivers and that was evident in Ike's absence.
