Chad Johnson joined the ranks of the other thirty or so NFL players who have been arrested this offseason last week, when he allegedly head-butted his wife, Evenlyn during a domestic dispute. The Miami Dolphins, who are featured on HBO’s Hard Knocks this season, decided to cut Johnson claiming that it was not simply a reaction to his arrest. However, it is clear that new head coach Joe Philbin and his coaching staff wanted to show the rest of the team that behavior like this will not be tolerated and no ones job is safe, even a former star like Chad. While there were plenty of reasons and justifications for terminating Johnson’s contract, it may be too soon to say that this decision was necessarily the correct one. Chad Johnson has not been convicted of a crime yet, which is important to remember. At this point his alleged actions are really only his word against his wife, Evelyn’s. Chad Johnson has not been arrested during his entire professional football career. Meanwhile, Evelyn seemingly made a career out of fighting people on VH1’s Basketball Wives. Youtube does not lie, as there are various clips of Evelyn aggressively seeking out fights and even throwing glass bottles at another cast member in one instance. This does not mean that Chad did not physically assault her (which is completely inexcusable) however, it is important to consider where the accusation is coming from. That being said, the Dolphins may have acted too quickly in letting Chad go. Understandably, they did not want his arrest to continually cause distractions during camp, but as Dolphin Linebacker Karlos Dansby explained, “it’s going to be an even bigger distraction right now.” After Johnson went on a rant with plenty of cursing earlier in training camp, Philbin set him straight, as Chad was silent and about his work in the week that followed. Although he struggled in the Dolphins first preseason game, Johnson had been doing well in camp and was seemingly the only real starting wide receiver on Miami’s roster, and now they must move forward with young and unproven receivers. Without a solidified starting quarterback, it may be tough to develop these receivers without a veteran like Johnson to show them the way to success on the NFL level. While the Dolphins decision to cut Chad Johnson is absolutely understandable, it could mean more distraction and less wins this upcoming season. Previously: Should Chad Johnson have been released?
