IRVING, Texas The Dallas Cowboys have reached a tentative contract agreement with veteran free-agent Justin Durant, a prospective starter at strong-side linebacker.
The Cowboys played host to Durant and defensive backs Will Allen and Michael Huff on Monday. Durant, 27, is signing a two-year deal (as first reported by ESPN) as soon as Dallas opens up cap room with moves to come that the club hopes includes new contracts with Tony Romo and Anthony Spencer.
Durant, a former second-round pick of Jacksonville, has been a full-time starter with the Lions and last year totaled 103 tackles. He played strong-side linebacker, a possible position of need for the Cowboys who have unproven youngster Kyle Wilber at that spot presently.
Allen, 30, was a part-time starter in Pittsburgh last year. He previously played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played safety in the same Tampa-2 defense being installed in Dallas. Allen has played in 130 NFL games, with 33 starts.
