Cowboys: Jake Ferguson blames himself for loss vs Eagles because of overlooked play
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Although there were many moments leading up to the dramatic climax of Sunday's showdown between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles, none of them mattered.

Dak Prescott and his offense had one play to win since the game clock stood at just five seconds. The problem was not just clock-related, it was yardage-related as the Cowboys were 27 tards away from the end zone.

And boy, were they close to pulling off the miracle.

Prescott targeted CeeDee Lamb on a route that cut underneath instead of going into the end zone like a usual Hail Mary. Likely, the intention behind the play is to catch the defense by surprise and have the receiver break inside instead of waiting for the ball to get there downfield.

The Cowboys quarterback hit his mark but Lamb was immediately met by a swarming trio of Eagles defenders and brought down at the four-yard line. Game over.

Fans might not be overthinking the four yards Lamb was short. The team lost because of many reasons, including questionable officiating and a bad stretch coming out of halftime when they allowed back-to-back touchdown drives.

But Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson admits he cost his team five yards one play before they needed four more to win the ballgame.

"I put that one on me, honestly," Ferguson confessed to reporters postgame. "The play before was a delay of game. I just couldn't hear but I've got to know in that situation what kind of play we're going to call, what we're thinking."

Ferguson was visibly confused when the Cowboys lined up one play before, 22 yards away from the end zone. The delay of game was called as a result of the sequence and thus Dallas was working from the Eagles' 27-yard line.

"That starts with lining up and getting the play off," Ferguson added. "The last play we were four yards short, we don't get that delay of game, we're in the end zone."

Credit where credit is due: The Cowboys tight end had himself a big-time game. He finished the day with 91 receiving yards and seven catches in ten targets. He was one of three players with a touchdown catch off of Prescott.
