Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz skipping rest of OTAs amid contract talks

The Dallas Cowboys used the franchise tag to retain the rights to tight end Dalton Schultz for the 2022 season, and Schultz ultimately signed the franchise tender worth $10.931 million. However, that was before the Cleveland Browns somewhat surprisingly put pen to paper on a deal with tight end and 2017 first-round draft pick David Njoku that is reportedly worth up to $56.75 million with $28 million guaranteed. 

It appears that was enough for Schultz to reconsider his options. 

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero (h/t Kevin Patra), Schultz informed the Cowboys he won't attend the rest of voluntary organized team activities amid his desire for a new contract. The deadline for clubs to sign franchise-tagged players is July 15, and Schultz would play on the one-year tender if the sides don't come to an agreement before that time.

As noted by ESPN stats, Schultz finished the 2021 campaign tied for the team lead with eight touchdown receptions. He was second among Dallas players with 78 catches and third with 808 receiving yards. 

Dallas' mandatory minicamp is scheduled to take place June 14-16. Schultz could be fined for skipping those sessions unless the Cowboys excuse his absence to keep the peace before the July 15 deadline, but it's unknown if he's considering not attending at this time.
