The Scores Report:
I’m sure this is one of many articles out there criticizing the process for selecting candidates for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Frankly, I understand some of the disappointment as good candidates like Charles Haley need to wait several years before getting in, but it makes a lot of sense to me when mediocre candidates like Art Modell are kept out. Chris Carter complained loudly when he didn’t make it the first year, but I never saw him as a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
The Hall of Fame is special because it should be difficult to get in. I actually like the NFL “debate” process over the baseball hall of fame selection process, though both work fine in my opinion.

From the mid 1980s through the 1990s, Charles Haley was one of the most fierce pass rushers in the game of football.Charles Haley's name easily can be brought up in the conversation with pass rushers like Derrick Thomas and Bruce Smith. It is a complete travesty that Haley is not in the Hall of Fame. His career demands that he gets enshrined in Canton as one of the greatest players...
The possible election of late Cleveland and Baltimore owner Art Modell to the Pro Football Hall of Fame has Browns fans on edge.
Modell is one of 15 finalists up for consideration on Saturday in New Orleans by a selection committee which will select between four and seven new members to be enshrined in Canton, Ohio, this summer. Coach Bill Parcells, former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo...
As a football franchise owner, as a businessman, as a stadium owner, as a HOF candidate. Art Modell has failed at all of these things. The streak continues.
Modell did not make the first cut from 15 to 10. Others left off the list of 10 were Tim Brown, Eddie DeBartolo Jr., Kevin Greene and Will Shields. The five going into Canton will be announced shortly from the list of ten shown...
You are going to hear quite a few media types using cliches today - as they are wont to do - and one will be along of lines of saying, "now that all the hype is behind us, all we have left is the football game."
And they would be forgetting one very important item that must be covered in this space. At least, one of my favorite portions of Super Bowl week every year and...
We were looking for a Jewish angle to the Super Bowl (besides Art Modell). Since its the Har-Bowl, we thought we'd poll some rabbis who have relatives in the rabbinate. Here are their picks.
Brothers Rabbis Avi and Jesse Olitzky
Avi: The Niners because the ravens embarrassed the Giants in the Super Bowl in 2001.
Jesse: I gotta support the Ravens because as an Os...
From a hashtag to a headline, Art Modell denied induction into the Hall of Fame again, on his latest closest shot. Thanks be to all the gods. All is okay on the banks of the Mighty Cuyahoga.
We’ll see you tomorrow at the Super Bowl party at Map Room and before that here for the traditional Super Bowl Preview post.
There is an oft-used phrase in the annual Hall of Fame discussions — that one “cannot write the history of the league without including” certain candidates — that might be appropriate to Modell. – Len Pasquarelli, Sports Illustrated
“You can’t write the NFL history without Art.” – Ozzie Newsome
“He left a huge imprint on the game, and one can’t write the history...
Look on the bright side….Art Modell didn’t make the Hall of Fame and Ray Lewis will never play another football game.
The Super Bowl was a fascinating and superb game last night. I can’t imagine not being able to enjoy that event as a pure football fan. The play on the field was very reminiscent of the 1987 AFC Championship Game between the Cleveland Browns and the Denver...
