Dak Prescott ‘aware’ of Jerry Jones’ comments on possible contract extension
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is on record as saying that he isn’t in a hurry to give star quarterback Dak Prescott a contract extension.

Jones wants Prescott to remain the starting quarterback in Dallas in 2024 and beyond, but he said recently that, “We’d like to see more leaves fall” before giving Prescott a long-term deal.

Dak Prescott shared on Wednesday that he is “aware” of Jones’ comments and has no problem with them. In fact, he said that he and Jerry Jones are viewing contract talks through the same lens.

“Obviously still [having] conversations,” Dak Prescott said. “Aware of what Jerry said. Everything he said is dead on. Communication has been back and forth.”

Jones said earlier this offseason that the focus for Dallas is on the 2024 season.

“We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year,” he said.

Things could obviously change, but as of now, it seems that the Cowboys might let the 2024 season play out before worrying about signing Prescott to a new contract.

Prescott, 30, is coming off his best season to date in the NFL, leading the league with 36 touchdown passes. Prescott finished second in the NFL AP MVP Award voting, only behind Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens. Dallas went 12-5 for the third consecutive season but failed to win a playoff game. With Prescott under center, the Cowboys are 2-5 in the postseason.

Dak Prescott looking forward to workout with CeeDee Lamb

Cowboys star receiver CeeDee Lamb had the best year of his career in 2023, hauling in 135 passes for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Prescott and Lamb haven’t done much work this offseason yet, but Prescott said Wednesday that they will soon.

“[Ceedee’s] not in town right now, but we will get it in. Trust me,” Prescott said. “If we’re roommates all of July, if that’s the case, that’ll be fine. So no worries.”

Lamb was drafted with the No. 17 overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The former Oklahoma star has made three consecutive Pro Bowls. He was also named first-team all-pro in 2023 and second-team all-pro in 2022.

Lamb and Prescott are hoping to build on the momentum they created this past season throughout the 2024 season. Prescott expects that to happen.

“I know what he’s doing. I know how he’s preparing. I know where he is,” Prescott said. “I know he was there before and how he came back. So all confidence in the way he’s preparing and what he’s doing.”
