Dan Campbell says he’s not afraid to make changes to Lions’ coaching staff

For as good as the Detroit Lions' offense has been through the first four weeks of the 2022 season, their defense has been the polar opposite.

Following Sunday’s 48-45 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at Ford Field, one in which the Lions surrendered 555 yards of total offense and didn’t punt the ball, head coach Dan Campbell didn’t pull any punches when asked what needed to be done to remedy Detroit’s struggling defense, which is on pace to allow the most points in NFL history.

“We’re going to look at everything,” Campbell told reporters when asked about considering changes to his coaching staff. “We’re going to look at it all, top to bottom.

“...We’ll look at everything we need to — the scheme to our personnel, and we’ll find the best fit and whatever we feel like’s going to give us the best chance and the best chance in three or four weeks too.”

With the Lions allowing an NFL-worst 35.3 points per game — 6.5 points more than the next closest team — and the most yards in the league (1,779), plenty of fingers are being pointed at defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

The 50-year-old assistant, who’s in his second season running the Detroit defense, could be on the hot seat. The Lions allowed the fourth-most yards per game (379.8) and second-most points per game (27.5) last season, and they seem to have regressed this year.

However, Campbell also acknowledged that while nothing is seemingly off the table, he wasn’t going to act hastily just to react.

"I'm not afraid to make a hard decision if I really believed that was the cause of it," Campbell said during Monday’s press conference. "I don't believe it is. I believe that Aaron Glenn is the right man for the job, and he gives us our best hope. Our best option to run this defense. I just do."
