The Redskins’ backfield was a fluid situation last season. After bringing in — and then cutting — former stars Larry Johnson and Willie Parker via free agency, coach Mike Shanahan was then forced to start a platoon of Ryan Torain and Keiland Williams for 11 games while incumbent starter Clinton Portis missed time due to injury.
Now Portis is gone, leaving Torain as the nominal starter. The ‘Skins did little to address the need in the draft, not picking any backs until the 4th round, when they tabbed Nebraska’s Roy Helu. Evan Roster from Penn State was also drafted in the 6th round.
In analyzing the state of affairs heading into the 2011 season, Rich Tandler of CSNWashington.com says that they would be well served to bring a veteran into the fold. Tandler specifically mentions Darren Sproles of the Chargers and Ronnie Brown of the Dolphins.
