The Jets' quarterback depth chart just got a little thinner.

Veteran signal-caller David Garrard told NFL.com's Adam Schein that he's retiring due to his surgically-repaired knee "not holding up."

"Having to call it quits," Garrard wrote in a text to Schein. "My knee is not holding up. Continuing to swell after practices."

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the 35-year-old Garrard relayed to teammates that he's no longer in Gang Green's plans. A formal announcement is expected "maybe tomorrow or the next day."

The Jets inked Garrard to a one-year contract in March, and the feeling was he'd have a legit chance to start this season. But his balky knee, which cost him the Dolphins' starting job in 2012, wouldn't allow it.

Garrard finishes his 10-year career with 16,003 passing yards, 89 touchdowns, 54 interceptions.

New York, meanwhile, is thrust into a bind, with only Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, and Greg McElroy left on the roster. While it once appeared Sanchez's days were numbered, the Jets may have no choice but to retain him and his $8.5 million price tag.
