For many Cleveland Browns fans the addition of Davone Bess was merely a side story.  All it took to highlight the importance of the Bess acquisition was a 2 game suspension of Josh Gordon.   Looking at a very young group of wide receivers Cleveland Browns GM Michael Lombardi obviously felt it was important to add a veteran presence at the position.  The kind of receiver that a young quarter back can depend on. Bess was a fan favorite in Miami and was known for his tremendous work ethic and his easy going nature.  Bess and his blue collar work ethic is a sure fit for an old rust belt city like Cleveland.  On first glance Bess is neither the biggest receiver on the field, nor is he the fastest.  For what he may lack in size or speed he makes up in clean route running, hard work, and steady hands.  No offense to the other young Browns receivers, but Bess adds something that this Browns wide receiver group hasn't had in a while, dependability. Browns fans and the Cleveland Browns organization alike can only hope that the veteran Bess will will rub off on the young players who surround him.  Bess is going into his sixth season in the NFL and has never had a season with less than 50 catches and 500 yards.  Dependable.  The young receivers need a veteran who can help them read defenses, display the kind of work ethic it takes to excel in the NFL, and ultimately push them to be the best players they can be. Despite his light hearted demeanor and NFL success, things haven't always been easy for Davone Bess.  In high school Bess was charged as an accomplice in a robbery.  Bess was called by some friends who needed picked up, Bess agreed and when they got into the car they had stolen merchandise.  The police caught up and Davone ended up spending 15 months in a juvenile detention facility. After his release through an old coach Bess was able to walk on at the University of Hawaii where he excelled.  After his time at Hawaii Bess went undrafted and worked his way onto the Dolphins team and eventually into regular playing time.  ESPN did a story on Davone, which has been embedded below. Whether it be on the field or off, Davone Bess has a lot to offer the Cleveland Browns young receivers when it comes to veteran leadership.  The question becomes will the young guys accept the leadership?  Will they allow themselves to be pushed?  With Bess one thing is sure, he's going to work extremely hard and he's going to produce.  Dependability is just who he is. Mike Lombardi unable to distinguish between correlation and causation (Cleveland Browns GM)

It would be one thing if the GM of your NFL football team slipped up once or twice in committing a logical flaw that a sharp fourth grader would be expected to avoid. But it’s only a Cleveland Browns thing when one of Mike Lombardi’s former co-workers reveals the existence of “countless notebooks” full of Lombardi’s “insistence” that correlation and causation are...

There’s now less than 1,000 hours until you can get your exhibition football fix. The Browns announced their training camp schedule last week. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Browns running back Trent Richardson is expected to be ready for training camp after being sidelined this spring due to injury. The good news with Richardson is that, despite reports he would miss all of August recovering from injuries, I’m told there is every expectation that he will be taking reps when camp opens. It will be interesting...

Lies In Sports – Are You Numb Yet?

When baseball’s most recent PED scandal broke, home runs records were being crushed, big names were being accused of cheating and players of all leagues were speaking before Congress and defending their reputation.  Time after time, we, as fans have been lied to but after so many lies, it’s sad to say that we (at least I am) are numb to all the lies and the shock value has gone...

LeCharles Bentley has some words for Browns receiver Josh Gordon

One of the sub-texts of the Miami Heat championship run has been Josh Gordon tweeting and seemingly reveling in the “Hate” on Twitter. It has been a topic of conversation on The Bull and the Fox in the afternoons on 92.3 the Fan. It has been a topic of conversation on Twitter, obviously. Now LeCharles Bentley, a former Browns player and also a lifelong Clevelander is weighing...

Clevelanders square off against Josh Gordon on Twitter

As Twitter smackdowns go, it was pretty significant. One ex-Brown taking on a present player, and handling things more than well. The present player: Wide receiver Josh Gordon, who during the NBA playoffs and especially the past few days has sounded the trumpet in favor of LeBron James and the Miami Heat. It seemed that Gordon enjoyed antagonizing Cleveland fans who are well not...
