Talk is heating up about the Washington Redskins one day returning to city limits, a short relocation from Landover, Maryland, home of FedEx Field.

However, one of the stipulations may include a change in alias.

According to the Washington Post, D.C. mayor Vincent Gray wants Daniel Synder's organization to consider revising its name prior to a potential move.

“I think that if they get serious with the team coming back to Washington, there’s no doubt there’s going to have to be a discussion about that,” Gray said. “And of course the team is going to have to work with us around that issue.”

The Redskins moniker, seen as a racial slur, has been a hotbed for controversy in recent years, with several other sports teams forgoing using its likeness.

“I think it has become a lightning rod, and I would be love to be able to sit down with the team … and see if a change should be made,” Gray said. “There’s a precedent for this, and I think there needs to be a dispassionate discussion about this, and do the right thing.”

Gray noted that a name change wouldn't necessarily be a "dealbreaker," but it'd certainly help the acclimation back into the multicultural city.

Founded in 1932 as the Boston Braves, the franchise moved to Washington in 1937. Before playing its games at FedEx Field, the team spent more than three decades at RFK Stadium in the heart of D.C.
