Can Matthew Slater Be the Answer at Safety for the New England Patriots?

I guess this expression comes into play right now: Desperate times call for drastic measures. This past week against the Indianapolis Colts, the New England Patriots were forced to start wide receiver and special teams captain Matthew Slater at safety. Entering the game, the Patriots had five defensive backs on the injury report, which ultimately opened the door for Slater...

The TV battle for Tebow vs. Brady: CBS and Kraft wins!

The Patriots-Broncos game won’t be played for two weeks, but it’s already featured quite the battle. Turns out, there was a royal rumble between CBS and NBC over whether the game will remain at 4:15 p.m. Eastern on CBS or get flexed to NBC as the Sunday Night Game. This was a solid breakdown here from yesterday, and the Denver Post reported that Patriots owner Robert...

Rob Gronkowski May Have Set Unofficial World Record for Spikes and 19 Other Patriots Thoughts

FOXBORO, Mass. -- The Patriots might return Sunday night from Washington as AFC East champions if they beat the Redskins and the Jets fall to the Chiefs, so the scoreboard watching (both games are at 1 p.m.) should be in effect, if not for the players then at least from the fan base. But there are plenty of other topics to discuss this week, so let's run through 20 thoughts in...

New England Patriots: No Run Game, No Problem

The 9-3 New England Patriots are on a four game winning streak and have a strong lead in the AFC East.  Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski have this offense rolling and the Patriots are looking to clinch the division this week.  The Patriots have done it the past four games all thanks to the passing attack of Brady.  The Patriots have gotten away from the run but does it really matter...

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski hits the record books again

The passing attack of the New England Patriots has been lethal this season and one player benefiting from it is TE Rob Gronkowski, a player scoring touchdowns on a blistering pace. Gronkowski scored three touchdowns yesterday, tying a record for the most touchdowns scored by a tight end in a single season. The record is held by both San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (2004) and San...

The Patriots Defense Closes Barn Door on Colts

Don’t let the score fool you, it wasn’t that close. The Patriots defense continued its improvement, even against a dysfunctional Colts offense. Facing the likes of Dan Orlovsky, the Patriots must have been licking their chops to get crack at him. However, Orlovsky proved to be a decent backup as he stepped in and did a much better job than Curtis Painter (not saying it...

Andre Carter happy in new surroundings

For Andre Carter, the 2011 NFL season has represented a renaissance. Released by the Redskins in March, Carter signed this offseason with the New England Patriots and now ranks ninth in the league with nine sacks. Carter had his best year as a Redskin in 2009, recording 11 sacks to lead the team, along with Brian Orakpo. But when Coach Mike Shanahan took over the following offseason...

On field, a clean Slater

FOXBOROUGH - Patriots receiver Matthew Slater patiently answered questions last week about teammate Julian Edelman’s versatility as a receiver and cornerback.

Patriots start three new defenders, including a wide receiver

We’ve hit December, and the Patriots aren’t even close to figuring out a consistent defensive lineup. Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald points out that the Patriots started three new players out of nowhere on their defense Sunday against the Colts, including a wide receiver. That wide receiver wasn’t Julian Edelman. Starting at safety against…

Kicking themselves

FOXBOROUGH - Bill Belichick spent the entire week leading up to yesterday’s game telling anyone who would listen that the Indianapolis Colts, despite their winless record entering their matchup with the Patriots, would pose a challenge.
