Akeem Dent says he is ready to step in at middle linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons. Dent, a third-round draft pick from Georgia last year, overcame concussion symptoms to take 28 snaps in Thursday's preseason win at Miami. It was his longest work in a game situation as Atlanta's starting middle linebacker. ''It was exciting to be out there on the field with my teammates,'' Dent said Sunday. ''Nothing compares to it. You can practice, study in the classroom and watch film, but you've got to be live to really see how you're progressing and what you need to work on.'' Dent had some growing pains. On the Dolphins' first snap from scrimmage, Dent didn't get proper leverage on a block, and Reggie Bush broke off an 18-yard run before free safety Thomas DeCoud made the tackle. Later in the first quarter, Daniel Thomas ran 9 yards up the middle against Dent before strong safety William Moore made the stop. For the most part, though, Falcons coach Mike Smith liked what he saw from Dent who finished with three solo tackles. ''He just needs to have the different looks and to experience them,'' Smith said. ''We'll try to get him up to speed as quickly as possible.'' In the hybrid scheme designed by new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, the Falcons (No. 13 in APPro32) will use 4-3 fronts, 3-4 fronts and sub-packages with five and six defensive backs. Sean Weatherspoon has taken the role held over the past three years by Curtis Lofton as the three-down linebacker. The Falcons' other starting linebacker, Stephen Nicholas, will be on the field when Nolan uses nickel schemes with a fifth defensive back. But Dent's responsibilities increased substantially after Lofton signed with New Orleans as a free agent and NFL veteran Lofa Tatupu was released on the eve of training camp with a torn pectoral muscle. Though 14th-year linebacker Mike Peterson re-signed following Tatupu's injury, Dent quickly emerged as the starter in the middle, but he is also working for the second straight year on the first-team coverage and return units on kickoffs and punts. He got a concussion in the first preseason game while trying to block a punt against Baltimore. ''I didn't see the hit coming and things like that, but it was something that I definitely had to sit out and take the time to get right before I could return,'' Dent said. ''I'm fine right now. I'm ready to progress and move on.'' DeCoud, a full-time starter over the past three years, wasn't concerned that Dent missed two chances to prevent big runs against Miami. He expects Dent to fill the void at middle linebacker. ''I don't think there will be any missed steps at all,'' DeCoud said. ''You can see that he has the tangible assets we're looking for on defense - speed, smarts, technique, you name it - to be a success in this league.'' Dent finished his rookie season with 20 tackles and one forced fumble, but he made those plays on special teams. Now he's getting a chance to do much more. ''All of us are excited to play in this defense,'' Dent said. ''(Nolan) brought in a system that's basically built for us to run around and play fast. That's something I do well.'' Notes: CB Asante Samuel was given the day off for personal reasons. Smith said he will return to practice on Monday. ... Starting NT Corey Peters (left foot) was placed on the reserve injured list and will be out through Week 7. ... QB John Parker Wilson lost the third-string job to undrafted rookie Dominique Davis and was waived. ... Reserve WR Kevin Cone returned to practice after missing the Miami exhibition with concussion symptoms. --- Online: http://bigstory.ap.org/NFL-Pro32 and http://twitter.com/AP-NFL

Once humbled, Falcons' Davis beating the odds

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. For every Kurt Warner (1994) or Tony Romo (2003), there are far more Doug Johnsons (2000) and John Parker Wilsons (2009). This year, the Falcons Dominique Davis is trying to be that rare quarterback who goes undrafted and lands a roster spot yet then defies the odds not only to earn one of the 32 prestigious starting jobs in the NFL but also has a measure of...

Fresh start excites Abraham, Edwards

John Abraham usually doesn't mind publicly critiquing his teammates on the Atlanta Falcons' defensive line. Abraham made an exception last year. while Ray Edwards battled injuries during their first season as teammates, Abraham kept quiet. Edwards is healthy and Abraham is talking. ''I think he was ready last year, but a lot of times your physical being can slow...

Reynolds vs. Konz: Who Should Start?

In watching the preseason action so far this summer, I think the Falcons could potentially have a dilemma on their hand. Well, dilemma may be an overly strong word for the situation. They have a ‘situation’ in which they have two potential viable options to start this season at right guard. Garrett Reynolds has gotten most of the first-team reps at right guard throughout...

Falcons waive QB Wilson

The Atlanta Falcons waived quarterback John Parker Wilson and placed defensive tackle Corey Peters on the reserve/non-football injury list because of a foot injury on Sunday to get down to the 75-player limit. Wilson has spent the past two seasons as the Falcons third quarterback. Peters has started 30 of 31 career games the past two seasons, while recording 73 tackles, including...

Corey Peters Out First Six Weeks, Mike Smith May Not Be Completely Forthcoming Regarding Injuries

Quite the shocking possibility that an NFL team may not be completely forthcoming with injury news, I know, but every offseason we find out about a player's true injury.  How many knee surgeries has Ray Edwards had?  I've lost count.  That situation reminds me of when Michael Jenkins had a "shoulder" injury expected to keep him out four to six weeks that left...

Atlanta Falcons Boast Four Premier Fantasy Football Players

When facing up against someone in your fantasy football league this season, hope they do not have a lot of players from the Atlanta Falcons. This could be the year that Matt Ryan emerges as a top-five quarterback, supported by multiple weapons that will make Atlanta one of the best offenses in the league.      Sports Illustrated has already anointed Ryan as the frontrunner...

Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders Look Good This Preseason

We’re obviously excited that the preseason is underway.   And it’s certainly not because of football action.   It’s because of cheerleader action.   More and more teams and putting on their final touches for the routines they’ll be using in the regular season.  And sometimes watching the practice runs are better than the real ones. I just used the word “runs”...

Atlanta Falcons flashback profile: defensive tackle Jumpy Geathers

For every NFL player, fan and even us media types, there will always be that one player we watched growing up that helped us gain a bigger appreciation for the game of football beyond its X’s and O’s. For me that player was Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle James “Jumpy” Geathers. Now when I say we gain a bigger appreciation for the game, I’m talking about that point in...

Scouting Report: Asante Samuel

Last week, I started things with scouting Sean Weatherspoon. Now it’s time to look at the Falcons only major pre-draft off-season addition still with the team: Asante Samuel, and what skills he brings to the table in 2012. Pros: Samuel is an instinctual cover corner with good ball skills, awareness, and excellent anticipation. Does a good job challenging throws when he...

Fantasy Football Stud: WR Julio Jones

Everyone that plays Fantasy Football player is looking for the next unheralded super-star. We all have players like Drew Brees, Andre Johnson, Ray Rice and Calvin Johnson on our first round draft boards, but not everyone will have Falcons WR Julio Jones that high on their boards. Well they should; WR Julio Jones is on the cusp of being the next Pro-Bowl NFL receiver. This is Jones...
