DENVER - OCTOBER 09: Mark Clayton #89 of the Baltimore Ravens is forced out of bounds by Champ Bailey #24 of the Denver Broncos during the first quarter on October 9, 2006 at Invesco Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado. (Photo by Brian Bahr/Getty Images)
And hoping to return to the field this Sunday against the (0-5) Jacksonville Jaguars. Champ Bailey stands on the sidelines after a foot injury in preseason (Photo Credit: Ron Chenoy:USA Today Sports) Wednesday marked this first day Champ Bailey has been a full participant at practice since he injured his foot in a preseason game on August 17. Though when one returns, three more go missing. Middle linebacker Wesley Woodyard, pass rusher Robert Ayers, and cornerback Chris Harris did not practice on Wednesday, all sustaining injuries against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. After Bailey signed a $43 million, four-year contract extension in February 2011, guaranteeing him a spot on the Denver Broncos through the 2014 season, it will be nice to see him back on the field. For some, however, they still have a sour taste in their mouth after the Broncos’ postseason loss to the Ravens last year. Bailey was covering Ravens’ receiver Torrey Smith, when he made two touchdown catches at 59 and 32 yards. As heartbreaking as that loss was, it doesn’t stop me from wearing my lucky number 24 jersey every Sunday, which has brought the Denver Broncos to 5-0 this season (at least I like to think it has). Whether you blame Bailey for the loss last year or not, his records as a Bronco speak for themselves. Bailey has 12 Pro-Bowl selections, a record for a cornerback, the most Pro-Bowl interceptions at four, tying with Deion Sanders and Everson Walls, and the youngest player at 21 years old to have three interceptions in a game (vs. Arizona Cardinals in 1999). In 2005, Bailey did not allow any touchdown passes that season, and had ten interceptions, tying with Asante Samuel. This could take me all day if I kept going…so I will just end it with the fact that I am happy we traded Clinton Portis and a second round draft pick for Champ Bailey with the Redskins back in 2004. Maybe I am just a Bailey cheerleader because I feel his jersey is lucky, or maybe he is just really that good. Whatever the case, I believe he will take that sour taste out of our mouths (if it still exists) when he steps back onto that field.
