Denver Broncos’ Perfect Trade Target to Help Bo Nix Revealed
Ben Lonergan/The Register-Guard / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Denver Broncos and head coach Sean Payton believe they have found their franchise quarterback of the future, in first-round pick Bo Nix, but the big task ahead is developing him.

While top wide receiver Courtland Sutton has been consistently mentioned in trade rumors throughout the offseason, the Broncos could be poised to make a blockbuster trade at another position to add to the infrastructure around their young quarterback.

More importantly than bolstering the skill positions, the Denver Broncos could look to add fortify the offensive line in front of Nix before the 2024 season kicks off.

Denver Broncos Urged to Trade for Steelers’ Nate Herbig

Few things matter more to the development of a young quarterback than playing behind a dominant offensive line, and few positions are more impactful to a line’s consistency than having an anchor at center.

Pittsburgh Steelers center Nate Herbig could be a name to watch for the Denver Broncos, especially after the Steelers selected his successor during the 2024 NFL Draft.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay put together a list of potential trades that would help the quarterbacks chosen in this year’s draft, including the below low-risk, high-reward swap for Herbig:

Broncos receive: OL Nate Herbig

Steelers receive: 2025 seventh-round pick

“Given the Steelers selected Zach Frazier,” Kay writes for B/R. “One of the top interior offensive linemen in the 2024 class—with a second-round pick, Herbig will likely be relegated to backup center duties this season. While the depth could help the Steelers, clearing up a roster spot while scooping some draft capital could be an even more appealing option for Pittsburgh’s brass.

“While he may not be a Pro Bowl-caliber talent, Herbig could stabilize the center position in the Mile High City. He did earn a commendable 67.6 Pro Football Focus grade last year—a noticeable upgrade over the 57.9 mark that Wattenberg scored in 2023—and has fallen below that mark just once in his five NFL seasons.”

Landing Herbig in exchange for a seventh-round pick would be a major win for Sean Payton, the Broncos, and for Nix.

Herbig, 25, still has plenty of upside and is coming off a 2024 season in which he allowed just one sack and 10 pressures last season.

If Pittsburgh’s plan is to start Frazier immediately, adding even a late-round pick in exchange for Herbig could prove more valuable as general manager Omar Khan continues to rebuild the roster.
