The Texans have had one of the best offensive lines in the league over the past few years, both in run blocking and pass protection, thanks, in large part, to their scheme and continuity. The scheme is still there, the famous Gary Kubiak zone blocking scheme brought over from Mike Shanahan and the Denver Broncos, where Kubiak was an offensive coordinator from 1995-2005, helping Shanahan win two Super Bowls. However, the continuity is gone as financial reasons forced the Texans to give up starting right tackle Eric Winston and starting right guard Mike Brisiel this offseason. The Texans have named their replacement for Winston, hoping that their scheme can make yet another unheralded draft pick look better than he is. Besides left tackle Duane Brown, no one on their offensive line last season was anything higher than a 3rd round pick, including two players who went in the 6th round or later. Derek Newton, who has won the job over Rashad Butler, was a mere 7th round pick in 2011. He f...

Derek Newton Named Starter

It was confirmed today by Head Coach Gary Kubiak that second year right tackle Derek Newton will be the starter heading into the 2012 Houston Texans campaign. Despite a camp battle with veteran Rashad Butler, it felt like Butler’s poor play is what gave way to name Newton the week one starter. Newton did show some bright spots and some potential of being a good NFL football...

Gary Kubiak says Andre Johnson is fine

Getty Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak told the media that wide receiver Andre Johnson should be just fine after getting the wind knocked out of him during last week’s preseason game. “He’s back getting treatments and doing some stuff like that,” said Kubiak per HoustonTexans.com.  “So we thought that was extremely important right now. As I said, Tim (Jamison) was...

Houston Texans Vs. Minnesota Vikings Preseason Game Preview

The final preseason game of the year for the Houston Texans probably has little public appeal. Tonight’s game at home against the Minnesota Vikings will almost exclusively feature the team’s backup players and those fighting for a spot on the final 53-man roster. The starters will not see any of the field as they rest and prepare for their regular season opener in Miami against...

Arian Foster Offers The Best Defense of Veganism … Ever

As someone who spent many years as a vegetarian and who still doesn’t eat the flesh of land animals, I’ve long respected vegans, if only because I can’t imagine having the willpower to eliminate cheese from my diet. I’ve known plenty of vegans who report feeling healthier as a result of eschewing animal products. They’ve done their research and have identified vegan-friendly...

Houston Texans Make First Round of Roster Cuts

Sunday night the Houston Texans reduced their active roster to 75 players after releasing and making other injury-related roster moves with 15 of their former employed. As always there was a mix of surprises and expected cuts. Season threatening/ending injuries always make the decision a bit easier for the coaches, so since four of the fifteen were walking wounded, the Texans coaches...

The Pogs: New Orleans Edition

NEW ORLEANS – The third pre-season game against the perennial NFC power New Orleans Saints featured the starters through the entire first half.  It was a matchup that most considered a major test for the Texans’ pass rush and secondary.  However, prior to the game, Wade Phillips made it known there would be no blitzing and the defense would operate in its base “vanilla”...

Preview: Vikings battle themselves in finale

The Vikings are playing the Houston Texans, but the competition is more internal than external as final roster dreams will be made and shattered by performances Thursday night. We look at some of the numbers games that will be playing out on the Vikings’ roster.

Frazier, Kubiak thinking of family, football

While the Vikings and Leslie Frazier face the Texans and Gary Kubiak at Reliant Stadium, their sons will be playing for Rice about three miles away.

UCLA set to open season at Rice

Klein Kubiak and Corey Frazier, one a receiver, the other a safety, have been facing each at Rice practice every day since 2010. Funny how the timing works out for their families on Thursday. The sons of NFL head coaches Gary Kubiak and Leslie Frazier will take the field with the Owls in the season opener against UCLA at about the same time their fathers' teams - the Houston...
