There are always two ways to look at things. The reaction to Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson getting a 5-year $51 million contract today has drawn reaction from both sides of the fence. Some are happy to have his big play making ability with the Eagles. Others feel the Eagles overpaid and rewarded a player for bad behavior. Let’s take a look at the good, the bad and the ugly of the situation with DeSean.

The Good:

DeSean Jackson is one of the most explosive receivers in all of the NFL. He is fast, and is a threat every single time he is on the field. His speed is his biggest strength, and it is that speed that worries so many teams that the Eagles play. It changes the way teams game plan for the Eagles. Because Jackson is usually double teamed or pulls safety help to his side of the field, he creates openings for other players on the team. While some have argued that Jackson doesn’t put up #1 receiver numbers, and therefore shouldn’t be paid as such, it is often his presence alone that can change a game. While that may be difficult to quantify, it is not something than can be overlooked. To do so, is very foolish.

The Bad:

Jackson has displayed a knack for making bone headed plays, or doing things that show a lack of maturity on the field. Does anyone remember him flipping the ball to a coach on the sideline after a punt return and taking a penalty? How about the times that he acts like a little kid if he’s not involved in the offense? The times we’ve seen him sulk when a ball is overthrown his way. How about his short arming passes? There can be no doubt that Jackson has been less than a model teammate at times. He has a reputation among some fans as being selfish and not really caring about the team. Jackson has also been knocked for not being effective in the red zone.

The UGLY:

DeSean Jackson is a small guy. He is listed at 5’9 3/4″ and 170 pounds. He is not a big body, and there is definitely concern about how he’ll hold up physically while taking punishing hits in the NFL. Jackson has also sustained 2 concussions already in his young career. At 25 years old, he could be a hit away from the end of the road. This was probably the biggest snag in Jackson getting a new deal. But it’s something the Eagles protected themselves against by reportedly guaranteeing only $15 million of the contract.

The Verdict:

Jackson is an enigma to me. I have always had very mixed emotions about him. I love his ability and I love watching him play. At the same time, I’m more of a fan of players that go about their business quietly, and let their performance on the field do their talking. With all of that factored in, I believe the Eagles did the right thing.

Jackson is too big of a talent to let walk. He brings a lot to the team whether it’s reflected in his numbers or not. I don’t know about you, but I would not have relished the thought of having him lineup against us. You saw our backfield last year, right?

And looking at this from the Eagles perspective, they finally did what they probably should have done a year ago. They took care of their own talent instead of lavishing every swinging d#ck on the free agent market. If they had ponied up when they should have, a lot of the DeSean drama may never have taken place. Most importantly, they have made a talented player happy and returned his focus back to the game of football. If he screws up from here, that’s on him, but the team is only on the hook for about a year and a half. Then, they can cut him loose or whatever they need to do.

IF Jackson does get back to the kind of football we expected out of him, then this can only be a win for the Philadelphia Eagles. As fans, we sometimes get caught up in the personalities and the externals of the situation. The fact is that DeSean Jackson’s teammates seem to love him. Maybe that’s all that matters.

I guarantee you if he can help this team win a Super Bowl, a lot of the naysayers will disappear.

Hey DeSean, time’s yours…
