As someone who has followed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since their addition to the NFL in 1976, I have seen some very poor teams hit the field. The 2011 version of the Buccaneers were a unit among some of the worst football the Bay area has ever seen. This year however, with the addition of rookie head coach Greg Schiano, the team has rebounded and actually are playing some of the best football in the league, on offense. Tampa Bay leads the NFL in total yards per play offensively this season, but a record setting performance from Doug Martin and exciting play has not motivate the fanbase in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers host the San Diego Chargers this Sunday and the game has been blacked out in the Tampa market. Tampa Bay opted into the new league rules which allow a reduced number of ticket sales, 85% of non premium seats to be sold prior to kickoff in order to avoid a blackout. Entering week 10, the Buccaneers have only had one “sellout” this season, two weeks ago against the New Orlea...

Doug Martin does not like being called ‘Muscle Hamster’

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin has been racking up yards and touchdowns over the last few weeks but there is something that bothers him. Martin has been nicknamed ‘Muscle Hamster.’ It is not the first time a professional athlete has taken exception to a nickname. While the nickname sounds like a compliment, Martin is not too fond of it. “It has to be the worst...

Week 10 Power Rankings: Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their ‘frightening’ offense make a big jump

We face the same challenge every week with our power rankings. The elite of the league seem to be pretty well entrenched, the top 10 is holding strong, but, when you get down through teams 11-20 it becomes increasingly complex.  This season, more than any I can remember, it feels like these middling teams are competing to fail, rather than to win. Whenever a team has an opportunity...

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Week 10 NFL Power Rankings (#11)

Last week: 11 (+8) Record: 4-4 The Buccaneers are surging thanks to Doug Martin’s improved play and the improved chemistry between Josh Freeman and new free agent acquisition Vincent Jackson. They’ve won 3 of 4 and sit at 4-4 with a +41 points differential that ranks 6th in the loaded NFC (for reference, it’d be 4th in the AFC). They rank 12th in yards per play differential...

Bucs game day: Keys to the game against the Chargers

The Buccaneers are looking to continue their offensive success from the past four weeks. Rookie running back Doug Martin rushed for 386 yards and five touchdowns on the ground the past two games but may have a tougher time against San Diego on Sunday.  Keep that play action going often With Martin’s recent success the past few weeks, the Bucs should expect the Chargers to crowd...

Bucs’ midseason review and prediction

Tampa Bay is eight games into the 2012 regular season and have already impressed many with their .500 record alone. But after starting 1-3 and winning three of their last four, the Buccaneers are beginning to make some noise around the league. Where the team ranks Total Offense – 9th (376.4 ypg) Rushing Offense – 9th (131.0 ypg) Passing Offense – 14th (245.4 ypg) Total Defense...

San Diego Chargers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Week 10 NFL Pick

San Diego Chargers (4-4) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-4) The Buccaneers are surging thanks to Doug Martin’s improved play and the improved chemistry between Josh Freeman and new free agent deep threat acquisition Vincent Jackson. Josh Freeman has a cannon for an arm, but he wasn’t using it last year, throwing 20 yards downfield or more on just 6.5% of his throws, by far least frequent...

San Diego Chargers at Tampa Bay Bucs: Three Bold Predictions

As I looked through this season for the Bucs and Chargers, I discovered an interesting little fact:They have both played Oakland, New Orleans, and Kansas City (the Chargers played the Chiefs twice), and both won against the Raiders and Chiefs but lost to the Saints (the Bucs missed overtime by a penalty).San Diego and Tampa Bay also have combined for one win against an opponent...
