PLAYERS: Harvard Rugland
TEAMS: Detroit Lions
A lot of folks are going to be talking about a lot of things after the Detroit Lions defeated the New York Jets in both teams’ preseason debuts, but one of the lesser subjects will obviously be Detroit Lions rookie kicker Havard Rugland.  I wish to give the young man his due on this page. Rugland worked the second half, relieving David Akers, and playing in his first organized football game at any level, drilled 49 and 50 yard field goals as if he was a veteran of some considerable years.  At first glance, the young Norwegian looked cool as a cucumber, but on the second attempt he really did not get all of it, but the ball drifted through the uprights and just cleared the crossbar.  That had to be nerves and inexperience, but the young man proved he could overcome them... Detroit Lions kicker Harvard Rugland, aka Kickalicious™, learned English by listening to Wu-Tang Clan

I’m sure you remember Kickalicious™. Or maybe you remember him by his government name Harvard Rugland. Or maybe you just remember him as the dude that kicks a football in unusual ways, in usual settings, for unusual results. And now that we remember him, it’s time to dig into his background. Rugland is Norwegian, he’s a germaphobe, and his name translates to “Howard” in...

Do-do bird sighted in Detroit

Over his tenure with the Detroit Lions, Head Coach Jim Schwartz has had plenty to say about the fullback position in the NFL, but never really giving the impression that run-blocking fullbacks were going to be an integral part of his team.  In the summer of 2010, he noted that those traditional fullbacks were essentially  dinosaurs. Once relegated to lead blocks, men like Jerome...

Three step drop with the Detroit Lions

The Lions disappointed their fans again last season.  They missed the playoffs but CJ set a receiving record because they were always behind. There are a lot of players that need to step up this season.  Here's a three step drop from the first preseason game. Step 1 - The offensive line, especially Reiff, did pretty well.  The Jets don't have a great pass rush but they...

Ghostface Kicker: Lions’ Havard Rugland learned English from Wu-Tang Clan

Norwegian kicker Havard Rugland, better known as “Kickalicious” got some great English lessons from the likes of Method Man, Raekwon the Chef and Old Dirty Bastard as he prepared for life in the United States. That little tidbit about Rugland was shared to the Detroit Free Press by teammate Rob Sims: The first day we’re hanging out in the hot tub, right?” Sims said. “I’m...

How will RB Reggie Bush impact the 2013 Detroit Lions?

For the last two seasons, the Detroit Lions backfield has been a carousel of backs as ineffectiveness and injuries took their toll. While Joique Bell finally added a little burst to the backfield last season, Mikel Leshoure continues to disappoint. At the start of free agency, Detroit set out to fix their backfield problem with the addition of free agent back Reggie Bush. The Lions...

Lions rookie lacks sense of history

Lions rookie cornerback Darius Slay may need to brush up on his NFL trivia. Like, the most basic of league knowledge. Green Bay's Lambeau Field is arguably the league's most famous stadium. Housing the Packers, one of the league's all-time greatest franchises, the pigskin cathedral has been standing since 1957. That's a solid 34 years before Slay was born, so maybe...

Nate Burleson Wearing a Detroit Lions Earring (Photo)

Who knew they ever had Lions earrings? I thought the one earring fad was over, but maybe not. Yes, Nate Burleson is wearing a lion earring. pic.twitter.com/Oi7WfQTTZ7 — Pride Of Detroit (@PrideOfDetroit) August 10, 2013

Herman Moore catches a touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford

Herman Moore was my favorite wide receiver growing up. Calvin Johnson gets the nod for all-time favorite wide receiver nowadays, but Moore will always have a special place in my heart. That's why it was especially neat to see him catch a touchdown pass from my favorite Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford during training camp this past week.  See for yourself:  Moore...

We Tang taught 'Kickalicious' English

Having trouble learning English? Step to the Wu. Detroit Lions kicker Havard Rugland is Norwegian, and discovered he could learn English by listening to the Staten Island-based rap outfit The Wu-Tang Clan (caution; this is a rap video, so proceed accordinly). "The first day we're hanging out in the hot tub, right?" guard Rob Sims told The Detroit Free Press . "...

Jets Open Preseason With Loss To Lions: 5 Things We Learned

Yes, it was only the first preseason game but we still learned a few things.  Here are the five most important things we learned:5. Rex Ryan doesn't have time to watch the offenseNow, that could explain a whole lot.  When asked about the interception Mark Sanchez tossed in the first quarter, the head coach replied "he never saw it"?  Does that philosophy apply to...

Did Jason Dufner or Matthew Stafford win the PGA Championship?

The PGA season is winding down to an end while the NFL season is getting ready to crank up. For the fourth time in five seasons, a new champion has been crowned in the last major of the PGA tour of the season, the PGA Championship. Jason Dufner experienced a fantastic week at Oak Hill but was it really Jason Dufner or was Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford actually playing...

Lions 26, Jets 17

Ziggy Ansah looked like a natural in his exhibition debut, when the rookie defensive end picked off Mark Sanchez's screen pass and took it back for a touchdown. Detroit coach Jim Schwartz wasn't at all surprised. ''I know a lot of people were looking at us sideways when we drafted a guy that didn't have a whole lot of experience,'' Schwartz said after...

New Lions make an impact in exhibition 26-17 victory over Jets

One of the points of emphasis for the Lions has been to create more mayhem on defense. And by mayhem they mean turnovers game-changing plays. They drafted a raw but extremely long and athletic defensive end with the fifth overall pick with the idea that he could facilitate some more mayhem. How do you like Ziggy Ansah so far? On the Jets’ fourth play from scrimmage in the Lions’...

Geno Smith leaves early as Jets lose 26-17 in Detroit

Detroit, MI – The Jets dropped their first preseason game tonight, 26-17, to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. On the Jets first drive Mark Sanchez threw a pick to Detroit's first-round pick, Ziggy Ansah, which the rookie promptly returned for the first score of the game. The Lions never relinquished the lead. But that wasn't the story of the game. In fact, Sanchez regrouped...

Lions start strong

DETROIT (AP) -- Mark Sanchez had an interception returned for a touchdown, and Geno Smith left with an apparent ankle injury in the New York Jets' 26-17 loss to the Detroit Lions in an exhibition game Friday night. Lions rookie Ziggy Ansah made an immediate impression, intercepting Sanchez's pass and returning it 14 yards for a touchdown. The 6-foot-5 defensive end from...
