The regular season is set to begin on Sunday, as the Detroit Lions will take on the St. Louis Rams at Ford Field. Before then, there's a few issues that need to be addressed, namely injuries and the salary cap. Here's the latest as the Lions prepare to open the 2012 season on Sunday.

  • Though they might not have wanted to make it on "Hard Knocks," the Detroit Lions will still be documented this season. They're starring in a documentary about being a Lions fan this year titled "The Season of Your Life." Thankfully, this didn't happen in the legendarily futile 2008 season. —Detroit Free Press
  • On the topic of replacement referees (certainly not a favorite subject here) Lions' defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch says their inclusion is unfortunate, but laments "what can you do."  Vanden Bosch also says he doesn't believe they will cost teams games or effect outcomes. —Detroit Free Press
  • One of those replacement referees working Sunday's game between the Lions and Rams will be Shannon Eastin, who will become the first female referee in NFL history. She was already the first woman to work a preseason game. —-Detroit News
  • The Lions signed cornerback Drayton Florence off the street last week, attempting to patch a hole and fill a definite need. But what sold the veteran Florence on Detroit? The chance to play immediately and start on a defense with several well known starters. —Detroit News
  • With Jahvid Best still on the sidelines and Mikel Leshoure's suspension set to begin, look for Kevin Smith to start at running back for the Lions against St. Louis, his first start since 2009. Smith talks about the excitement of making the 53 man roster, and explains how the experience of being cut has changed him and helped him not take life for granted. —Detroit News
  • The salary cap has been an issue since last season's CBA, and the Lions are just barely over the cap. They'll need to get under by Wednesday, so watch for a few players to restructure their deals to get the team under. —Mlive
  • Injuries to two starters in the defensive backfield are putting the hurt on the secondary. Chris Houston is still hurt, as is Louis Delmas, both of which were held out of practice. Chris Burke of The Detroit Sports Site provides a quick update on the status of both heading into Sunday's opener. —The Detroit Sports Site
