PLAYERS: Ezekiel Ansah
TEAMS: Detroit Lions
Havard Rugland happy to be in the NFL (Photo Credit: Getty Images) Takeaways “Ziggy” Ansah stops running back Bilal Powell for no gain (Photo Credit: Kirthmon Dozier/Detroit Free Press) -Two international players with the least amount of football experience, but with the most impressive nicknames delighted Detroit Friday night.  Rookie Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah of Ghana showed us his size and burst with a pick six  on the Jets’ first drive.  The number five pick followed with a nice move on stud left takle D’Brickashaw Ferguson with a run stuffing tackle for loss.  Later on in the game 28-year-old YouTube kicking sensation Havard Rugland of Norway, a.k.a. “Kickalicious”, bashed two field goals from 49 and 50 yards deep. -Nostalgia of last year crept up the throat when Matthew Stafford’s first pass was deflected.  While last season is hoped to be an off-year for the 4th year quarterback he did his best impersonation of the inconsistent, inaccurate passer we had witnessed too often.  But just like last year Stafford found Calvin Johnson when he wanted too.  In fact, Stafford’s only three completions were to Johnson for a total of 58 yards.  Stafford only has eyes for his record-breaking receiver and while they make a great couple, he has to get out more and see other friends.  His buddies Nate Burleson and Ryan Broyles were out of commission tonight, so I will give the former number one pick some slack.  However, Stafford’s clinginess must end or else the Detroit Lions will have the same predictable offense they displayed last season. - Special teams looked great!  Just like the aforementioned ‘Kickalicious’, veteran David Akers made both of his field goals.  5th rounder Sam Martin showed off his boot as well.  His first punt went for 54 yards with great hang-time and left the Jets behind their own 10-yard line.  Patrick Edwards showed a spark in the punt return game with a 25-yard dash that was called back because of a block-in-the-back penalty.  While special teams may seem trivial, the Lions lost multiple games last season solely through their ineptness at every aspect.  If they can turn those negatives into positives their close losses will become wins. - Who is Matt Willis?  The undrafted 29-year-old with only 30 catches for 385 yards amassed in his career dazzled Ford Field grabbing the Lions’ lone offensive touchdown.  He caught three for 51 yards on the night,  not including a spectacular snatch made out of bounds.  Willis has been a special teams player for the bulk of his career with the Denver Broncos. Detroit Lions defense give each other a group hug after Ansah’s pick six (Photo Credit: He is highly unlikely to make the active roster, but the Lions’ back-end of their wide receiver depth chart is open for competition as a plethora of no-names try to make their mark in the NFL. No-Huddle Notes The offense stalled early and often just like last year’s 4-12 group did. The new-look offensive line did just fine in the aerial attack, but lacked any push in the run game.  Look for bulldozer Larry Warford to supersede Dylan Gandy at guard to help appease that issue. The defense applied the immense pressure I was hoping for, along with stifling the Jets at the line of scrimmage.  One could not help but notice rookie ends Ezekiel Ansah and Devin Taylor shine in their stints. The linebackers were porous against the pass just as expected leaving short and middle routes wide open.  Deandre Levy whom the Lions rely upon for coverage skills wound up chasing the tails of an inferior Jet offense. The secondary had no impact.  They rarely blew an assignment but came away with zero turnovers and failed in aiding the linebackers.  The addition of a healthy Louis Delmas could do wonders. One Last Thing Detroit defensive linemen having a little fun at Suh’s expense(Photo Credit: Rick Osentoski) Did we just watch a preseason game?  Maybe it was just the long layoff from football, but I found myself catch a goose bump from the sheer enthusiasm I witnessed.  Ford Field was sold out, the fans were going nuts, and the players looked like kids on Christmas.  The camaraderie and joy this team exemplified in early August looked unique to me, so yes I am excited for Thursday.

Detroit Lions Allow Racial Slurs

Is a racial slur used between friends still a racial slur?  A couple of players in the Detroit Lions’ locker room are, somewhat inadvertently, putting that question to the test. The relationship between tight end Tony Scheffler and safety Louis Delmas, a friendship which dates back to their time together at Western Michigan in 2005.  Scheffler spoke very highly of Delmas and...

Lions at Browns: Five things to watch

Jim Schwartz takes a 13-4 preseason record since becoming the Detroit Lions' coach into Thursday night's game at Cleveland. Coach of the Month for August? Here are five storylines to follow in the second of four exhibitions: 1. The first-team offense was on the field for two series totaling 11 plays in last week's 26-17 victory over the New York Jets. All three of...

Lions need continuity for an effective secondary

ALLEN PARK, Mich. Its not easy to keep track of all the defensive backs who have made their way into the Detroit Lions lineup in recent years. Injuries and mediocre results led to six different cornerbacks and six different safeties getting at least one start just last season. Cornerback Chris Houston, in his fourth year with the club, has seen it all. Ive probably played with...

Louis Delmas likely won’t play this preseason

Detroit Lions safety Louis Delmas doesn’t expect to play this preseason as he continues to rehab his knees. “Is it important for me to get out there? Yes. But is it wise? Right now I don’t think so,” said Delmas, per Tim Twentyman of Delmas is a heck of a player, but his health has to be a major concern for the Lions.   Need NFL Tickets? Loading.....

The Pride of Detroit

The toughest battle the Detroit Lions will have to face this season won’t be an opposing team, but will be in their efforts to restoring the pride of a city they call home.   After attending the Detroit Lions’ first preseason game, who were playing host to the New York Jets, I realized more than just a 26-17 victory from the home team. I realized that, even after a disappointing...

Detroit Lions 2013 Fantasy Football Projections

QB Matt Stafford (Detroit) One of the weird statistical things about the Lions in 2012 was that Matt Stafford set an NFL record with 727 passing attempts, but managed just 20 touchdowns. Well, somehow a running game that ran just 391 times on the season managed to steal 17 touchdowns away from Stafford, while backup Shaun Hill stole another 2 on 13 attempts. The Lions should remain...

Lions’ Louis Delmas doesn’t expect to play in preseason

Detroit Lions safety Louis Delmas recently told reporters that he feels as good as he has in years. However, as Delmas continues to recover from lingering knee issues, he told Justin Rogers of that he doubts he’ll play in the preseason. "I'm kind of doubtful about it, but I still want to get out there and participate with my teammates before actually hitting...

Matt Stafford’s Girlfriend Can Cut a Rug
