If not for a big mistake by the Denver Broncos and a fax machine, there wouldn't even be a conversation about Elvis Dumervil being on the open market. But, late Friday afternoon, a mistake happened and Dumervil went from being extended to becoming the best free agent pass rusher available. The dominating defensive end was scheduled to make $8 million dollars. The Lions, after Cliff Avril's departure, just happen to need a new defensive end. There's been a thought that Detroit plans to go cheap to replace Avril and Kyle Vanden Bosch, but a major proven difference maker like Dumervil was never expected to become available. He could take Detroit's defense to the next level, and would certainly be worth a sizeable investment. In the name of staying aggressive, Martin Mayhew should already be on the phone, figuring out if it's possible to work Dumervil into the fold for 2013. Yes, there are salary cap realities, but if the Lions are serious about winning a Super Bowl, they would be exploring every single possibility towards adding more talent. With the NFLPA now involved, Dumervil might end up returning to Denver anyway, but if not, it's certainly a move worth exploring for a team with a definite need. Imagine a defensive front with Dumervil, Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley. It would be the most dominating line in football. Add to it Detroit's addition of Glover Quin and the potential for adding depth at corner and suddenly, the defense would be lights out instead of a usual weakness. This is exactly the type of bold move Lions' organization should make, especially if winning multiple championships are their goal. Gone should be the days where the Lions sit back and let the football world spin around them. After a headline making week, Detroit should capitalize and finally steal the football show for once. Adding Dumervil, an 11 sack performer last season to an already improving defense, would certainly fit that bill. Max DeMara is the managing editor of Lions 101. Rumor Mill: Denver Has Made a Higher Offer to Dumervil than Baltimore

Per Les Shapiro of Denver’s ESPN Station 102.3, The Broncos have made a higher offer to bring back Elvis Dumervil than what is currently on the table from the Baltimore Ravens.  This is pretty unfounded at this point, so it comes down to how good of a source Les has.  That said, it appears the organization is holding to their word that they’re intent on keeping Doom in the...

Broncos prefer to re-sign Elvis Dumervil

We reported earlier that Elvis Dumervil wasn’t thrilled with the Broncos’ contract offer, which will force him to meet with other teams. Broncos, Dumervil still in talks

Somehow, through it all, the Denver Broncos and Elvis Dumervil are still on speaking terms. The fax machine relationship clearly wasn’t working. After a second denial by the NFL to reconsider the Broncos and Dumervil’s case, and after Dumervil fired his previous agent and hired Tom Condon, the team and their defensive end are still in talks, The Denver Post reports. Dumervil...

Patriots showing interest in Dumervil

This article originally appeared on the blog 60 Max Power O. Find more coverage here . It would be poetic justice if the New England Patriots could sway defensive end Elvis Dumervil to play in Foxboro. The Denver Broncos were able to sign longtime Patriots receiver Wes Welker with the old strategy of double dipping, getting a great receiver while hurting a conference foe. Revenge...

Denver Offers Dumervil New Contract After “Fax-gate”

Denver Broncos team president John Elway went on record today with ESPN stating the team has made a new offer to defensive end Elvis Dumervil after his agent failed to file the paperwork of an agreed upon restructured contract by the 4 P.M. EST deadline. “We’ve offered Elvis a contract,” said Elway Tuesday afternoon. “We’d like to have Elvis back.” The terms of this new...

Steelers Interested In Long And Dummervil? Really?

Over the last few days the Pittsburgh Steelers have been reported as having interest in former Denver Broncos defensive end/outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil and current St. Louis Rams tackle Jake Long.
