Expected to provide an electrifying spark to Chicago’s offensive attack this season, Devin Hester has been a disappointment to say the least thus far, catching just two passes for 27 yards through three weeks.

When asked about his poor production this season, Hester expressed frustration with his inability to get involved in the Bears offense, but he was careful to also lay some of the blame at his own feet.

“It’s hard being one of the top electrifying players in the league and you’re not able to get your hands on the ball as much as you want. They know I want the ball. I just have to keep working at it, keep my head up, and get better every day. And don’t let it distract me.”

– Bears wide receiver Devin Hester

Hester, 29, has been the league’s most exciting return man since he was drafted 57th overall by Chicago in 2006, bringing a total of 17 kicks/punts back for touchdowns in his seven seasons. His offensive output though, has been limited at best, with just 196 catches for 2,592 yards and 13 touchdowns over the same period.

For their part, the Bears are still committed to getting Hester involved in as many ways as possible, and put a plan in place each week to make an effort to get Hester the ball.

“I mean, it’s just a matter of we don’t know what’s going to happen during the course of a game. We go in with a plan — sometimes those plans are determined by what happens to us defensively — but we have a plan for him every week. And then you have to adjust depending on what’s happening in the game.”

– Bears receivers coach Daryl Drake
