Nick Foles, Philadelphia Eagles QB passes for two touchdowns in second game There was a lot of speculation this week that Eagles coach Andy Reid would make a quarterback change.  Earlier today, he confirmed what I expected all along.  Michael Vick will remain the starter, at least through Monday night’s game against the New Orleans Saints. Many hoped that Andy Reid would make the move to Nick Foles in order to maybe give the team some different energy.  Maybe even to make a statement about how dire it is for this team to begin to play better.  At 3-4, the season is hardly lost, but where there was once optimism, there is only a resignation among the faithful fans of Philadelphia. 3-4 feels a lot like 1-5 for some strange reason. Michael Vick has not had a very good season, accounting for 13 of the Eagles 17 turnovers.  More startling than that, is the fact that he hasn’t jump started an offense that many people considered to be one of the most explosive in the NFL.  The offense has consistently looked out of sync, out of rhythm and completely uninspired.  Michael Vick has been a playmaker throughout his career.  While I’ve never been particularly fond of his game, the fact remains that he had the ability to make a play where no chance existed.  Michael Vick has always been very exciting to watch.  He provided his team with a spark and a swagger. I have seen no such spark and no such swagger this season.  In fact, Michael Vick looks defeated. He looks like he’s been ridden hard and put away wet.  Michael Vick looks old. Nick Foles impressed a lot of people and turned a lot of heads in the preseason, where he got the bulk of the workload because of an injury to Vick.  The fact still remains that Nick Foles, the 3rd round draft selection of the Eagles from Arizona, has never taken a meaningful snap in the NFL.  All the preseason vanilla that opposing teams throw at you, turns into 36 flavors and then some in the regular season.  That’s not to say that Foles wouldn’t be able to deliver. I still hope, for the sake of this franchise, that Foles can be successful. I just never believed that Reid would make the decision to go with him right now. Changing to a rookie quarterback in the first half of a season is something that teams do right before the blow up the roster in the offseason.  Changing QBs midway, sends a message of desperation and panic to your locker room.  Giving up on a veteran QB, especially one you just handed a mega contract to last year is also a sign that the train has come completely off of the tracks. None of these things describe the kind of person or coach that Andy Reid is. The truth is that train HAS come off the tracks.  But for Reid to admit that would mean this season is lost for certain.  Reid is nothing if not a fighter.  You could also call him pig headed and stubborn, but the result is the same.  Andy Reid is going to keep doing it his way until there is no choice left but to make changes.  When things get painful enough, change will surely follow.  We may be dangerously close to that point, or maybe closer than Andy Reid would like to admit, but we’re not quite there yet. A win against the Saints evens the record back up.  It also leaves a bunch of games remaining against terrible teams with losing records.  I don’t hold out any hope that the Eagles will be able to turn it around, especially with Michael Vick as their QB, but Andy Reid has to… and that means staying with Michael Vick until he can’t.
