After soundly beating the Redskins 23-7 in Week 13 of the regularseason, the New York Giants were unquestionably the best team in theNFC at 11-1. But two days before the victory in D.C., things suddenlychanged for the G-Men. On November 28, wide receiver Plaxico Burress brought a loadedweapon into a nightclub and instead of being responsible with it, he accidentally shot himself in the leg and forced the Giants to end his season by placing him on the non-football injury list. The Giants never really recovered after that. They had beat theRedskins so convincingly that it gave the players and coaches theopportunity to say, "See? We don't need him." And the public bought itbecause they had witnessed Eli Manning throw for 305 yards without hisstar receiver being on the field.(Read the rest after the jump.)

  • Receiver is one of the most overrated positions in the NFL? are you serious. Almost every team that has won the super bowl has had a pretty solid receiving corps or one outstanding receiver. I dont want to go down the list but check the teams that have won the super bowl past couple of decades.

If the Giants had burress against the Eagles, who knows, thats hindsight talk. But All I know is that it is a different game when he is out there. He blocks downfield which Hixon didnt do at all, there is less D players in the box, other WR are open and he is almost guaranteed to score in the redzone. I am a Giants fan and I was unsure to who was going to win because of the Burress Effect. As for this team chemistry nonsense, it sure did good for us in the last month. Good job Eagles as much as I felt that the Giants lost the game more than the Eagles won it but the Giants did that last year against the Cowgirls. So all is fair game.
  • The Patriots never had a dominant receiver when they won. The Eagles never had a dominant receiver when they went to the NFC Championship Game X amount of times and they didn't have TO in the playoffs when they went to the Super Bowl in '04. Who did the Bears have in '06? Tampa didn't have a great receiver in '02, either.

Yeah, receiver is important but it's overrated compared to how it's general perceived by the masses - especially when you compare it to other positions on the football field.
  • As much as I'm glad the Eagles won, Burress' antics are a huge reason the Eagles one. He's been a major factor against them(especially Sheldon Brown) so the G-Men definitely missed him. There is no such thing as an overrated position. Any of them. Ask the Eagles last year about the importance of a kick returner. Ask them this year about the importance of a fullback this year. The reason Reid became a head coach is because he overwhelmed Jeff Lurie with his emphasis on a longsnapper. The Eagles don't have great receivers but for once they have a steady group(excluding Greg Lewis) which is why they moved the ball in the second half.
  • He certainly doesn't deserve it with the Giants and will never get it. Whether or not he deserves it with another team will depend on how desperate that team is for a receiver.
  • Possilble headlines from Dallas later on? "T.O. gets cut, Burress to replace him" ??? Wouldn't surprise me.
  • That or the Raiders. There is always somebody who will take a chance.
  • Absolutely, he did'nt hurt anyone but himself. It's not like he shot anyone else. And in our society people are entitled to a second chance. Hell Michael Vick will get another chance, you can bet on that. I have said since the incident that Plax made his bed and he is going to have to sleep in it. If a judge gives him probation due to the fact that he does not have prior arrests and convictions, then he will have to remain under control during his probation and put all this nonsense behind him. Anyone who feels he does not deserve a second chance should move to Russia or North Korea, they applaud narrow minded ideals.
  • If he learns from his mistake and stays out of trouble, he'll be fine. I'm not sure he is the type that's going to do that, but I would be for giving the guy another chance. He does perform on the field, but it has to be a 3 strikes and out deal.
  • For crying out loud ii's not like He shot somebody he shot himself, and other then the fact that he can be a nutjob in the lockeroom,He is a talented wide reciever just needs to get his priorities straight, other then that the Giants want him back Eli Manning and Ahmad Bradshaw want him back heck the GM has gone on the record and said he wants him back so Plaxico Burress aka Cheddar Bob get your sh*t together and play football...
  • Why does a guy his size need a loaded piece in his jeans? It's not as if he can't protect himself. He's a beast on the field, as he should be, but needs to be kept in a cage when he isn't playing.
  • um...YES, could this be the elusive Eagles receiver wev'e been looking for???? haha jk, but that would be amazing, take about fighting fire with flames
  • being known for shooting YOURSELF in the leg is punishment enough, i say let come back
  • *him
  • Absolutley!! I'm sure he's learned a lesson or 2 after shooting himself in the leg. As long as he didn't hurt anyone else I say yes. THe Giants need him badly.
