New England Patriots
MIAMI (AP) -- With the game on the line, the quick-strike New England Patriots showed they can grind out a drive, too.
As a result, they're the AFC East champions.
Tom Brady had his least efficient game of the season and even threw an interception, but he led a clock-consuming drive in the fourth quarter Sunday that helped the Patriots beat Miami 23-16 to clinch their fourth consecutive division title.
Brady finished 24 for 40 for 238 yards and was sacked four times. But with the Patriots nursing a 20-13 lead midway through the fourth quarter, he led a 16-play drive that took more than seven minutes and led to a field goal.
A botched punt, roughing-the-punter penalty and fumble by Miami resulted in 17 New England points, and another penalty negated a Dolphins touchdown.
The Patriots (9-3) have won six consecutive games and are assured of their 12th winning season in a row. The Dolphins (5-7) hurt their already slim playoff chances and lost to New England for the fifth consecutive time.
Brady was intercepted for the first time in 203 passes, and for only the fourth time this year, and his passer rating was a season-low 74.8. He had at least four passes dropped, including a throw to Wes Welker in the end zone.
The Patriots kept their play-calling conservative and finished with a season-low 321 yards. But when they took over at their 20 leading by a touchdown in the fourth period, they produced their best drive of the day.
It covered 77 yards, setting up Stephen Gostkowski's third field goal with 1:10 to go.
Trevor Scott led New England's stout defensive effort with two sacks, including one to force a fumble that set up a field goal. Jerod Mayo sacked Ryan Tannehill on third down midway through the fourth quarter, forcing the Dolphins to settle for a field goal.
Welker tied Jerry Rice's NFL record by making at least 10 receptions for the 17th time. He had 12 catches for 103 yards and a score.
Tannehill went only 13 for 29 for 186 yards, but finished two runs with brazen acrobatic leaps. He vaulted over the goal line to elude linebacker Rob Ninkovich on a 2-yard touchdown run.
The botched punt on the Dolphins' opening series led to a New England touchdown. With the ball wet following a brief shower, punter Brandon Fields dropped a low snap and was tackled at his 12. The Patriots scored five players later on Stevan Ridley's 2-yard run.
The roughing-the-punter penalty on Miami's Jimmy Wilson gave the Patriots a first down deep in their territory, jump-starting a 75-yard drive that ended with Welker's 7-yard touchdown catch.
Miami's Reshad Jones made a one-handed interception and returned the ball 30 yards for a touchdown, but the score was negated by a penalty on Reggie Bush for an illegal block. New England then held, and Dan Carpenter kicked a 44-yard field goal.

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots won the AFC East in Miami on Sunday
The stadium formally known as Joe Robbie stadium has always been the New England Patriots “little shop of horrors”. No matter how good the New England Patriots are, or how bad the Miami Dolphins are, it always plays out as a game that the Patriots will find some way to choke away down the stretch. Today...
Wes Welker terrorized the Dolphins secondary on Sunday to move into the NFL record books
Remember back in the beginning of the season when Wes Welker was getting “phased out” of the Patriots’ offense? It was during the first two weeks when he wasn’t even listed in the starting line-up, was barely getting targeted, and there was even talk that the Patriots’ were doing so...
Hot News for QB Tom Brady
An old rivalry has Tom Brady — or at least those playing around him — seeing red.
The quarterback was again on the short end of the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry this week after the Buckeyes polished off their undefeated season with a win over the Wolverines. That meant Brady, a proud Michigan alum, was once more stuck wearing an Ohio State jersey for a day thanks to a running...
Save this picture, because it’s one of the few times you’re going to see Tom Brady in Ohio State gear.
The former Michigan quarterback apparently lost a bet with his former Patriots teammate over last weekend’s Michigan-Ohio State game and had to wear the Mike Vrabel Buckeyes jersey you see above during a recent practice.
“As promised #buckeyenation. A bet is a bet” Vrabel...
A lot has changed in this league over the last decade or so, but one thing remains the same: Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are constantly in contention in December. And while Manning is in a new home now, that's again the case this year. You could argue that despite some serious concerns Brady's Patriots and Manning's Broncos are in prime positions to meet in the playoffs...
In an odd scheduling quirk, the Miami Dolphins (5-6) and New England Patriots (8-3) waited until December before their first matchup of the season, which will take place Sunday at Sun Life Stadium in Miami. Tom Brady and the Patriots have been steamrolling all comers lately, while the Dolphins hope to keep their playoff hopes mathematically alive by upsetting the division leader...
He is young. He is only a red shirt freshman. He has a lot of school in front of him. He probably doesn't know anything about New England. But he just might possess the perfect combination of skills that would catch the eye of a football genius like Bill Belichick. Can you imagine?Tom Brady starts to slow down...Bill Belichick starts to wonder when he is going to find someone with...
In a league that features weekly man-to-man battles between elite pass rushers and high-paid offensive tackles, J.J. Watt is a little different. Not because he draws a double-team, but because he draws a team-team. Watt lines up all over Wade Phillips' defensive front depending on the situation."... we’re going to have to have more than one guy ready to handle him and...
It’s always strange to see veteran players change teams late in their careers. It’s especially strange when those players have to change into their chief rival’s colors.
After seeing Mike Vrabel‘s tweet this week that showed Tom Brady wearing the crimson and grey of Ohio State, it got us thinking how bizarre it would be to see Brady in a Jets uniform. The Jets have been one...
2008: The last time the Patriots didn’t win the AFC East was due in large part to their franchise quarterback tearing his ACL on Opening Day.
It’s not how many games you win. It’s when you win them.
While championships are the ultimate goal, they can, and usually are, achieved without perfection. The NFL is the only American sports league in which teams actually have a somewhat...
After a disastrous start to the season a year ago, meaningful December football will return to Miami this weekend as the Dolphins take on the AFC East leading New England Patriots. The 8-3 Patriots have yet to feel any pressure from their division rivals as they can already clinch a playoff spot with a win on Sunday while the 5-6 Dolphins will look to build off their comeback victory...
Week 13 is the turn into the home stretch. Teams are trying to collect those final wins to solidify or improve playoff positions. This week has a few games that have teams whose playoff fates may be determined this Sunday. I will list a few of those games, with the point-spread involved of course!! New England Patriots ( 8 - 3 ) at Miami Dolphins ( 5 - 6 ) Vegas Line : Patriots...
It’s fourth down. Your team is down by five. There’s four seconds on the clock. And it’s 14 yards to the end zone. Who do you want as your quarterback? Tom Brady? Peyton Manning? Andrew Luck? How many Colts fans would have picked our rookie quarterback at the beginning of the season? And now…after Sunday?
Andrew Luck is quickly becoming that quarterback. That quarterback...
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - New England is efficient enough without help, but Miami mistakes led to 17 first-half points for the Patriots, who defeated the Dolphins 23-16 Sunday to clinch their ninth AFC East title in 10 years. The Patriots won their sixth straight game as they improved to 9-3 and guaranteed a 12th straight winning season. A fumbled snap on a punt, a roughing-the-kicker...
