Well the Dolphins have brought in another quarterback to compete in this years training camp, only it’s not the one that may or may not have been rumored to be lurking in the shadows yesterday; Brett Favre.

Yes, instead of going through and pursuing Favre, the Dolphins have gone ahead and signed three year veteran and ex-Patriot and Jet, Kevin O’Connell to a contract. O’Connell was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2008 draft, a round behind current Dolphins starter Chad Henne. O’Connell has had a string of bad luck during his NFL tenure, getting released by both the New England Patriots and the New York Jets, and going through a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder.

Despite not having much NFL experience, do not forget that O’Connell spent two years studying behind Tom Brady, arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the game. He had Bill Belichick as his coach for two seasons, arguably one of the best coaches in the history of the game. So to say that O’Connell is merely a camp body would be a farce. While it would also be untrue to say that O’Connell was brought in to push Henne, O’Connell could well be competing for the backup spot, along with Matt Moore.

So far in O’Connell’s career, he has played in two games, going 4-6 for 23 yards during his rookie year with the Pats.

To make room for O’Connell, the Dolphins released quarterback Tom Brandstater, who was the Dolphins third string quarterback to finish the season last year.
