DAVIE, Fla. -- The "Suck for Luck" campaign was in full force a year ago. The Miami Dolphins were 0-7 and in position to land Andrew Luck with the top pick in the NFL draft. It didn't happen. The Dolphins suddenly turned matters around and finished 6-10. Indianapolis ended up with the highly touted quarterback. But the Dolphins have come out OK. They managed to get quarterback Ryan Tannehill with the No. 8 selection. Several Miami players, including center Mike Pouncey, defensive end Cameron Wake and backup quarterback Matt Moore, say Tannehill is the best rookie quarterback in the NFL. That's right. Better than Luck. Better than Robert Griffin III, taken No. 2 by Washington. Another guy on the Dolphins who believes Tannehill is better than Luck is rookie tackle Jonathan Martin, who just happens to be Luck's former Stanford teammate. The two are good friends who talk on the phone weekly. "Obviously, I'm a fan of Andrew," Martin said. "He's a good friend. But, at the same time, I support our guy. He's doing a great job for us and I think he's been playing the best ball of all rookie quarterbacks (Luck) might be a little mad at me (for saying that), but whatever." If the No. 1 pick is upset, he can take it up with Martin when the Dolphins and Colts meet Sunday in Indianapolis. It would mark the first time Tannehill goes against another member of the 2012 star-studded rookie quarterback class. Tannehill's status is somewhat in doubt due to being knocked out in the first quarter last Sunday against the New York Jets with a a left hyper-extended knee and bruised quad. But Tannehill did some practice work Wednesday while wearing a brace. Wide receiver Brian Hartline is "confident" Tannehill will play. Tannehill is hopeful. "I want to play obviously," said Tannehill, who would be replaced by Moore if he can't go. "I want to be out there. I'm just going to do everything I can to be ready and hopefully that's the case." It would be interesting to see how the two rookies match up. Both have led their teams to surprising 4-3 records. "I'm sure it will be really fun for the fans, seeing two rookie quarterbacks going head-to-head," said Miami running back Reggie Bush. "Obviously, two guys who are going to have long careers in this league. Two special players. And hopefully Tannehill wins. For Luck, it would be his second regular-season game against another rookie starting quarterback. The Colts on Oct. 21 won 17-13 over Cleveland, featuring Brandon Weeden. Weeden is one of five NFL rookies starting at quarterback. The fifth is Seattle's Russell Wilson, a third-round pick and the only not to have been taken in the first round. "I guess it is fun to be able to talk to them after the game, win or loss because you know them," Luck said about facing another rookie. "But I don't know. I've never really got into who the opposing quarterback is thing. I worry a little bit more about what the defense is doing." It sounded as if Luck and Tannehill compared notes. "Yeah, I think it's interesting," Tannehill said of possibly facing Luck. "It's a storyline as I'm sure (the media) will make it. I think it's exciting for a lot of people, but, as players on the field, we're both, you're not really thinking about the other quarterback of the other team no matter who it is. You're thinking about their defense and the guys on your team. At least Dolphins fans are thinking much more positive thoughts about their team than at this time last year. The Dolphins were going nowhere, and some fans actually were rooting for them to lose in order to get Luck. Luck heard about it. He wasn't thrilled. "I wasn't too fond of that idea when someone brought it to my attention," said Luck, who called Tannehill a "fun guy to watch" and said "he can make all the throws." "I've never believed that fans should encourage their team to lose. Things tend to work out in a good way. I'm glad that both organizations are headed into the right direction. Midway through the season, Tannehill has a higher passing efficiency rating than Luck. He's completed 120 of 203 passes (59.1 percent) for 1,472 yards with four touchdowns and six interceptions. Luck is 160 of 288 (55.6 percent) for 1,971 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions. Now, the two could settle some arguments on the field. "I think that will be big time," Moore said of the match-up. "They were both top-10 picks and they're both playing at a high level It should be great for the fans." One thing is for sure. Dolphins fans now will be rooting for their team to win. Chris Tomasson can be reached at christomasson@hotmail.com or on Twitter@christomasson

Dolphins Injury Report: Ryan Tannehill Update

Ryan Tannehill acknowledged that if needed he probably could have re-entered Sunday's game against the New York Jets.  However, he was not needed.  The woeful Jets could do nothing against Miami, so there was no sense in risking Tannehill further.  An MRI was still scheduled after he was knocked out of the game with a knee injury.  Tannehill went for the MRI yesterday. ...

Tannehill will face Luck this week but could be pulled by coaches

Ryan Tannehill (knee) is expected to be on a short leash if he gets the green light for Sunday’s game versus the Colts. A source tells the Palm Beach Post that the coaching staff won’t be afraid to go to the bullpen for Matt Moore “if Tannehill’s knee inhibits his play.” This is just to be careful with their very promising quarterback. It will be interesting to see how...

Tannehill was limited in practice for the third day in a row Friday and again wore a brace on his left leg. He left Sunday's 30-9 victory over the New York...

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin was noncommittal Monday regarding the Week 9 status of Ryan Tannehill (quad, knee). Tannehill did express “optimism” on the team flight home about facing the Colts. “I don’t know much, but it was a good conversation on the plane,” Philbin said. The Dolphins are still awaiting MRI results, but are “optimistic” tests won’t reveal a serious...

Miami Dolphins contender or pretender?

It has been four years since the Miami Dolphins have been interesting. Hats off to rookie head coach Joe Philbin and rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill for having such a positive impact on an organization that many didn’t want anything to do with. They even needed Chad Johnson and Lauren Tannehill just to make HBO’s Hard Knocks relevant. Regardless, the Dolphins are in the playoff...

Dolphins game plan versus Colts

It's week nine of the NFL season and the Miami Dolphins take their three game winning streak to Indianapolis to take on the Colts in a game that was not expected to have much significance. However, those expectations are three months old and the matchup that was projected to decide which team would likely land the first overall pick in the 2013 draft now has...

Mike Pouncey: Ryan Tannehill is NFL’s best rookie QB, will be like Tom Brady

You could easily make the argument that Ryan Tannehill has exceeded expectations as the starting quarterback of the Miami Dolphins this season. His TD-to-interception ratio of 4-to-6 is underwhelming, but Tannehill’s quarterback rating of 75.8 is not all that bad for a rookie leading an offense. Most importantly, he has played well enough to lead the Dolphins to a 4-3 record. But...
