Dolphins’ Odell Beckham Jr. opens up on Jalen Ramsey relationship

Odell Beckham Jr. had his introductory press conference as a new member of the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday, and during the session, he was asked about his relationship with cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who he played with during his short stint with the Los Angeles Rams during the 2021-22 campaign.

Beckham speaks very highly of Ramsey here, noting that Ramsey played a major role in getting him to Los Angeles a few years ago and also was a significant factor in Beckham’s decision to sign with the Dolphins this spring.

The Rams won a Super Bowl during Beckham’s brief stay there, and Beckham played a rather big part in the run after joining the club midseason. He was waived by the Cleveland Browns in November of that year and certainly made the right to decision to link up with Ramsey in LA.

Beckham logged 21 catches for 288 yards and a couple of touchdowns in the playoffs that year, including two grabs for 52 yards and a score in the club’s Super Bowl win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Now, Beckham is hoping to experience that same type of journey with Ramsey in Miami.

Beckham is signing with a Dolphins team that already has Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in its receiving corps. In other words, Beckham is signing up to be Miami’s No. 3 receiver, and he surely knows that.

There was a time when Beckham was one of the best wide outs in football. During his five-year run with the New York Giants between 2014 and 2018, Beckham made three trips to the Pro Bowl and registered four 1,000-yard campaigns. However, injuries and behavioral issues ended his stay in New York, which resulted in a traded to the Browns.

Even by the time he got to Cleveland, it was clear that Beckham was no longer the same dynamic player, as he spent just two-and-a-half overall disappointing seasons with the Browns. He has not logged 1,000 yards since his debut campaign in Cleveland in 2019.

But now, at 31 years old, Beckham likely understands that he is in the twilight of his career and is merely an auxiliary option at this point.

He had no problem with that role in Los Angeles in 2021, and he also took no issue with playing second fiddle to Zay Flowers with the Baltimore Ravens last year. During his one-year stint with the Ravens, Beckham caught 35 passes for 565 yards and three touchdowns, demonstrating that his time of being a No. 1 receiver is long gone.

If Beckham can rein in his ego (which he has managed to do in recent years) and accept the fact that he will be Tua Tagovailoa’s No. 3 target in South Beach, he should absolutely be able to help the Dolphins’ offense in a big way. Hill and Waddle draw significant attention from opposing defenses, which should open up Beckham for some easy targets.

The Dolphins’ aerial attack was already No. 1 in the NFL before it signed Beckham. Now that Beckham is in tow, it may end up reaching new heights.
