The power of the protest outside of the Miami Dolphins headquarters became strong enough that a disgruntled season ticket holder that was participating in it actually received a phone call from owner Stephen Ross.

Ross, who has learned more about public rejection than any other sports owner in recent memory, called up loyal fan Jason Lawrence to explain the personnel moves made by the team recently, and specifically the trade of wide receiver Brandon Marshall to the Bears. The call lasted all of 2 minutes, and was arranged by Dolphins CEO Mike Dee.

“I was nervous as hell,” Lawrence said. “I was shaking, and everything. I thought they were going to be upset. …It was the coolest thing I ever did in my whole life.”

“[Ross] said they had been shopping [Marhsall] for a couple weeks,” Lawrence said. “Nobody would return their phone calls about getting him. If Chicago didn’t take [Marshall] … they would have ended up cutting him very shortly after that, and got nothing.”

Ross informed Lawrence that the team wasn’t rebuilding was trying to protect the morale of the team. They did not move Marshall for the sake of money, which many believed was the intention, because at the time the Dolphins were seeking a deal with Peyton Manning, who rebuffed the Dolphins before anyone else that had shown interest in him.

“[Ross] said Peyton Manning wasn’t comfortable with the Dolphins, and he understands it 100 percent,” Lawrence said.

Which sounds very much how Matt Flynn intimated things were once he signed with Seattle. But Ross pretty much denied that it was Flynn’s decision. He claimed that the Dolphins didn’t really want him when it came down to money.

“[Ross] goes, ‘If my coachwanted Matt Flynn didn’t you think he would be here?’” Lawrence said. “‘If my coach said I want Matt Flynn as our starting quarterback next year he would be here, but I couldn’t pay Matt Flynn $8 million to come here. If I end up getting him, it’s a gamble … and I’m still drafting a quarterback. I’m still looking for another option.”

Most would struggle to believe that to be the case. While it is true that Flynn would be a gamble, the Dolphins only had Matt Moore at the position, then ended up giving a contract to David Garrard and will now have to spend a draft pick on a QB that most likely isn’t NFL ready. Flynn at least has had preparation playing behind Aaron Rodgers and understood the offensive scheme and philosophy of head coach Joe Philbin.

Wh about about Ross’ earlier point about not being in a rebuild? Yeah, sure. The Dolphins have been in a perpetual rebuild since the retirement of Dan Marino. No, the team never won a Super Bowl with Dan at QB, but were always competitive and had several playoff appearances during his tenure. The Dolphins have had more QBs than Hugh Hefner has had girlfriends since 2001.

Mr Lawrence may have felt it to be cool to speak with the owner of his favorite team, but it was nothing more than a publicity stunt by Ross and the the organization. Not exactly a good one either, as he didn’t do a very good job to justify the personnel moves made by the team this offseason.

Just another example of the Dolphins being one of the most inept organizations in all of sports. Ross might want to keep himself out of the spotlight with these PR moves, and hire some talented front office people to turn them into a desirable and winning organization.
