Up to this point, it’s been a particularly gut-wrenching season for the new-look Dolphins.

Back-to-back overtime losses to the Jets and Cardinals have dropped the team to 1-3, last place in the AFC East. And though they’ve played better than their record indicates, Miami isn’t proud of the product they’re putting on the field, prompting one player, center Mike Pouncey, to issue a public apology.

“It’s tough to let go of a game like that,” Pouncey said, via the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “We got to figure ways to make those plays at the end of football games. If you look at film and watch this team we should be 3-1 right now, but that’s the NFL. Very frustrating. Say sorry to the fans, it’s all on us, those games we should’ve won. We got to finish these football games and we’ll turn it around and be a winning football team down here.

“We don’t look at ourselves as a 1-3 football team; we look at ourselves as a 3-1 football team, which we should be today. You can’t take it back; it’s the NFL, it happens, but we got 12 more games and we will turn it around.”

There is some merit to what Pouncey is saying, that the Dolphins, had a few breaks gone their way, very easily would have been sitting with three wins. If the usually reliable Dan Carpenter had hit those field goals in Week 3 … If the club had held off the Cardinals in the final minutes of Week 4 …

It’s fair to wonder what could’ve been, but it doesn’t change what actually is. Truth is, the ‘Fins have nothing to be ashamed of, and certainly aren’t the worst team in the league. They play solid defense (most of the time), employ an explosive rushing attack, and seemed to have discovered a worthwhile quarterback, something that’s escaped them for more than a decade.

However, the NFL isn’t about woulda-coulda-shoulda. Just the opposite, in fact. Teams control their own destiny and play on the field largely accounts for their record. If the Dolphins are to become an upper-tier club, then Pouncey and the rest of his mates need to make it happen. Fortunately for them, there are three quarters left of the season to do so.
