It was an eventful Friday night for Dennis Hickey. After standing pat in round 1, the Miami Dolphins made three trades on Day 2 of the 2014 NFL Draft. First, the Dolphins traded the 50th pick to the Chargers for the 57th and an additional 4th round selection (125th overall). Once they were on the clock at No.57, they traded back once again, this time with the 49ers to acquire the 63rd and 171st picks. The Dolphins finally made their first selection of the night, drafting WR Jarvis Landry. At the start of round 3, Hickey was more aggressive as he traded up with the Raiders for the 67th overall pick, sending picks 81 and 116 to Oakland. Miami then selected OT Billy Turner. Round 2, Pick 31 (63rd overall): WR Jarvis Landry, LSU NFL Network’s Mike Mayock had high praise for Jarvis Landry, calling the LSU wide receiver one of his two 10 favourite players in this draft. He also considers Landry to have the best hands of any pass catcher in this draft and said “when you put the tape on to watch Odell Beckham play, you can’t tell which is Beckham. For those wondering, Beckham was drafted 12th overall. Landry is not an explosive or fast receiver, but is the type of player that will fight for the ball. Landry only dropped one pass last year, showing his ability to catch almost any call thrown to him. He should soon become a favourite target for Ryan Tannehill. This selection puts the roster status of Brandon Gibson, Rishard Matthews and Armon Binns in jeopardy, as it is highly unlikely that all 3 will make the final 53-man squad. #MIAPick GM compare Landry to Anquan Boldin except quicker. Turner is a very raw prospect that plays with aggression and nastiness. He played left tackle in college but will likely slide in as a guard with the Dolphins. Whether or not he will be able to contribute from day 1 remains unclear, however he has all the tools needed to succeed. With such a high ceiling, Turner has the potential to be one of the steals of the draft.
