This past week the Miami Dolphins added to their roster with some pre-draft signings of their own. Of the biggest signings, GM Dennis Hickey welcomed aboard quarterback Jordan Rogers after welcoming him in as a practice squad quarterback last season.  In fact, most people didn’t know this, but Rogers was an accomplished quarterback in college playing for Vanderbilt in 2012.  Rogers currently is better known for being the younger brother of Super Bowl winning and Pro Bowl quarterback Aaron Rogers. In addition, the Dolphins signed Kevin Cone, a young receiver from the Atlanta Falcons (Dennis Hickey’s rival organization) to add some “camp” hands to the receiving corps.  However, if Cone could compete with Armon Binns and other receivers if he picks up the new Bill Lazor offensive system in Miami. Lastly, Jason Fox, offensive tackle was brought in on a one year deal to help provide depth and or start at Right tackle.  The move wasn’t necessarily a surprise given the Dolphins need for adding depth to the tackle position pre-draft.  However what’s most interesting about this move is that Eric Winston, more durable, was on the market and the Dolphins passed on him and his lofty demands.  Winston would have fit the zone block scheme in Miami having been in Houston and in Kansas City.  Fox, remember played his football in college at the U (University of Miami) and is a local favorite. Could the Dolphins approach Winston after the draft? Certainly, but only if the draft does not prove fruitful for them or an unforeseen injury occurs during OTAs. As the Dolphins head into the next phase, pre-draft, look for them to take a good look at the key positions that need depth and competition.  As of now, the Dolphins could use another running back to push Lamar Miller and Mike Gillislee.  While Miller has yet to show what he can do, in the Lazor offensive system, he could prove quite incredibly good. What else do the Dolphins need?  The team is one of the youngest on offense and defense in the NFL, some people say build through the draft, but it takes much more than just talent from the draft to put this team, which is clearly tweaking it’s approach to be one of the best next season.
