ADP ( average draft position) is the term that refers to what rounds players are being selected in mock drafts. It has long been one of the best tools to predict what players may end up on your team based on what position you are drafting from. Too often though, people will live and die by ADP rankings during their drafts.
Some fantasy football owners have even attempted to use ADP rankings to determine values for players in trades, which is completely ludicrous. The best way to approach ADP is to use it simply as a guide and nothing more. Look at your personal rankings, which players you are targeting, and what rounds they are going in.
The worst thing you could do is not get the player you want simply based on his ADP. If you want to take Tony Romo in the 4rth round (which is a few rounds higher than his current ADP) because you think this is the year then by all means do it. You are the G.M. of your team, so manage it any way that you would like- after all, you’re the one that has to run the team for the next four months.
The same thing happens In the NFL drafts. We have seen so called reaches turn into superstars and safe picks turn out to be busts. Similarly to fantasy ADP rankings, most incoming pro prospects have a pre-draft grade. Do you think an NFL owner or G.M. will pick a player based on what all the draftniks and mockdrafts are saying?..NO! They will use them strictly as guides for what other teams might be thinking on players, but will pick who they believe is the best player based on their own research and scouts.
Though ADP rankings are useful tools, they should only be used as a guideline for determining the approximate value that the majority of fantasy football owners are placing on particular players. The most successful fantasy football owners will consider many other factors as well.
