TEAMS: Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots
You have moved to Philadelphia, you fell in love with an Eagles fan, or you are just plain sick of becoming a football widow every season. Fear no longer! Bela, the EagleGirl to the rescue! I fell in love with football and the Birds while living in Philly many years ago. Yes, it is basically against the law to live in the City of Brotherly Love and root for a different team. I had to learn the hard way!
It took a couple of games to understand football, period. Where I originally came from, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, we play with a round ball, and we score one point at a time. But, if I can have full command of the off-sides rule and basically guess-timate how much extra time is given post regulation, I can understand what I used to call American football, and, now call, my favorite sport.
Ladies, let me break it down to you! If your significant other is an Eagles fan, you are also entering in a relationship with our team. Why fight, when you can enjoy the ride? Besides, girls who love sports are always the most popular girls. Next season, why not dazzle your beau with your new found knowledge? I will start with some baby steps, and will move along to some more intricate nuances of the game.
First of all, know the basics:
The Philadelphia Eagles were established in 1933. We play the NFC East – that means we hate the Giants, Redskins, and, especially, the Cowboys. Our current head coach is Andy Reid who is always loved and hated by us, the fans, depending on game results and transactions. Despite beating Vince Lombardi and his Packers in 1960, the Eagles have never won a Super Bowl (since merger). Our most recent appearance was in 2004 against the New England Patriots – we still hold resentment towards Brady and Belichick for beating us, and towards McNabb for allegedly throwing up in the huddle, and choking. Our current quarterback is Michael Vick. Despite some delicate ribs, he has the ability to scramble and arm to make some plays if he can only stay healthy, which leads to the upcoming draft. Our most pressing needs are a legitimate MLB, a WR with actual red zone play-making ability, and a pass-rusher. Some fresh blood never hurt anyone, so I wouldn’t turn down RG3 if he was available (a girl can dream!).
This week you need to know: Franchise Tagging – basically each team has the ability to place the franchise tag on one player, who is due to become an unrestricted free-agent, each year (certain conditions must be met). Basically, it is like putting a hand bag on hold until you decide to commit and make that purchase. We have placed their franchise tag on DeSean Jackson, a WR from Cal. He had an uneven 2011 and made the highlight reel for his on field performance, as well as for his prima donna tendencies.
We will continue to explore the Eagles throughout the off-season, regular and post seasons. If I am doing my job right, by the time of our first game kicks off, you will be able to talk football with the best of them, enjoy the games with your significant other, and become a true fan!
