Doug Martin might need a new nickname if he keeps on his pace of 1,600 rushing yards. (Credit: Cary Edmonson, US Presswire) Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin has become a bit of a household name in the past few weeks after two huge rushing performances. This past week, Martin came close to making a play at the single-season rushing record, but finished with 251 yards on 25 carries. Now that Martin is becoming so well known around the football community, is it time for him to get nicknamed? Well, he already has one from his Boise State days, and he’s not exactly content with the title of “Muscle Hamster”. “It has to be the worst nickname ever,” Martin said. “I can’t shake it. It started in college, started back in Boise, with our linemen. I have a lot of bigger friends, and they’d call me the Muscle Hamster because of how much I could lift in the weight room.” Coming up with nicknames for short, brute running backs is rarely an easy task. Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew was dubbed Pocket Hercules, hardly a conventional nickname, for his durability and skill at breaking tackles. While it might not be as cool a nickname as Revis Island (Darrelle Revis), Megatron (Calvin Johnson), or the Tasmanian Devil (Troy Polamalu), it’s definitely fitting for Martin, who benched 225 pounds 28 times at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine. If Martin continues his success from the last few weeks, we might have to give him a more standard title: Rookie of the Year. Martin has 794 yards on the season, which puts him ahead of veterans like Arian Foster, Chris Johnson, and Ray Rice . Martin is truly having a sensational year, and he’s going to give quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III a run for their money come voting time at the end of the season.
