A recent report suggested that the deadline for the Bucs to trade for Darrelle Revis is the Friday before the draft. Others have suggested that a trade can come down as late as the Bucs being on the clock in round one. Whether these are smoke screens given from the Bucs or Jets to the media or the media just throwing suggestions out there, here is another scenario for you to ponder. Several outlets have gone back and forth saying the Bucs are willing to give up their 2013 first round pick while others say they are undecided or unwilling to do so. Well, a possible reality is both scenarios can happen. Tampa Bay can very well keep their 13th pick in round one and select whoever they choose to draft. Later in the evening, they can trade back into the first round and flip that pick to New York for Darrelle Revis. It’s certainly a possibility, so why not? Last year, the Bucs traded their No. 36 and No. 101 picks to New England to get back into the first round and draft some running back out of Boise State you may have heard of. In this month’s draft, Tampa Bay holds the 43rd and 112th picks – picks that are of lesser value. However, what could be key in a trade to get back into the first round is their third rounder – the 73rd overall pick. But the Bucs need to find a team to make that happen. The bottom five teams in the draft that are possible trade partners are Denver, New England, Atlanta, San Francisco, and Baltimore. Out of those five, Denver and New England may be the best scenario due to the lack of picks they have (New England with five, Denver with six). And with that, New England lacks “quality” picks as they do not have picks in the 4th through 6th rounds. So the Patriots – again – may be their best option. On the flip side of that, the Jets would have to agree with – or even like – the lower first round pick. Every report up until now has the Jets interested in a Bucs first round pick whether it’s in 2013 or 2014. Why not give them the one you just traded for. Now this is all hypothetical but could very well be a reality. How this can work is after the Bucs select a player at 13, the Jets can view it as time running out on a potential destination to ship Revis to and get something for him. Jets’ general manager John Idzik can make a call to Bucs’ general manager Mark Dominik and say, “look, you can have Revis if you get back into the first round” and proceed to negotiating on further compensation from there. If the Jets truly want to move Darrelle Revis, the ball will be in their court. In fact, it has been in their court for quite some time now.
