New Orleans started out the season at 0-4 and has fought back to a 5-5 record, a three-game winning streak, and winning five of its last six games. The fallout from bounty gate is slowing going away, and the Saints are getting their groove back. Sunday the Saints have their biggest game of the year against the San Francisco 49ers. Drew Brees has thrown for 3,066 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2012 but it’s been the resurgence of creating turnovers on defense that has made a huge difference. Brees spoke to WWL in New Orleans with Bobby Hebert about how the defense has come together to help the offense. “We had a lot of turnovers early in that season. I can tell you this: The statistics will tell you when you get a defensive score you win like 85 percent of the time. Right off the bat you know you have a tremendous advantage the minute you score defensively. If you are able to add another turnover at some point, like we did in the game against the Raiders, it kicks it up to 95 percent, so that is championship football. That’s not just winning football. That is championship football. Offensively, for us, we are thinking about how can we sustain drives? How can we be as balanced as possible? How can we use up this clock? How can we create momentum and good field position for our defense? And that’s complementary football and I think that down the stretch here, in these last six games, I think we have done a really good job as a team of playing complementary football, feeding off one another offensively and defensively. Special teams comes up with a big return to start the second half against the Raiders and the very next play we are running that ball into the end zone. That’s the way it’s supposed to be done there.” var switchTo5x=true; stLight.options({publisher:''});
