Drew Brees believes Mark Ingram and Adrian Peterson could be the top running back duo in the NFL.  Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Count Drew Brees among those within the New Orleans Saints organization excited over the addition of Adrian Peterson to an already-formidable offensive arsenal.

Peterson, who signed a two-year deal with the Saints earlier this week, is expected to share backfield duties with Mark Ingram, who enjoyed his first-ever 1,000-yard season last year.

Brees feels both running backs could thrive with the competition for opportunities serving as a motivating factor.

“I think both of those guys run with a bit of anger and a bit of passion and an edge, which is what you want from the guy who’s in there,” Brees said, via The Times-Picayune. “I think that in this day and age in this league, it’s nearly impossible to go through a season with just one guy. You have to have two backs that are a one-two punch because it’s just too physical; it’s too tough of a position to play week in and week out.

“I think having both of those guys as this one-two, I think makes them potentially one of the best tandems in the league.”

Brees, much like Ingram, is welcoming Peterson with open arms.

“Listen, you’re talking about one of the great running backs that’s ever played this game,” Brees said of Peterson. “I think he’s got a lot left in him. I’m sure, by all accounts, he’s excited about the opportunity, so I think we’re getting a guy who’s hungry with a chip on his shoulder.

“I think he’ll add a great complement to what we have with Mark Ingram, who I think is one of the best running backs in the league right now.”

Peterson, who recently updated his social media profile pics to showcase his new team, said in a statement issued Wednesday signing with the Saints “just felt right within my spirit.”

Peterson obviously suffered through an injury-plagued campaign last season with the Minnesota Vikings, appearing in only three games. If the veteran could somehow replicate his 2015 campaign, during which he appeared in all 16 games and rushed for 1,485 yards and 11 touchdowns, the Saints’ backfield tandem could be downright lethal.
