This offseason, the Jets allowed tight end Dustin Keller to test the free agent waters, opting not to re-sign the 2008 first-round pick.

After some hemming and hawing, Keller eventually took his talents to South Beach, inking a one-year deal with the division rival Dolphins.

Though he's no longer a member of Gang Green, Keller still has a pretty good pulse of his former team, and the media coverage that goes along with it.

"There's always some type of nonsense going on. When you're in the New York media you don't say that you're used to all of that, there's always going to be distractions," Keller told SiriusXM NFL Radio, via NFL.com. "But this is really more so than anywhere else. You're really talking about a team, we didn't even go to the playoffs the year before and it seemed like we're in the media more than anyone else, and for the wrong reasons -- you never want that.

"Could it have anything to do with the season, kinda things falling apart? I really don't know. When you're in that market, it just has to be something you're ready to deal with."

Keller certainly has experienced his share of "distractions," including the Jets' failed Tim Tebow experiment. That, coupled with drafting Geno Smith, has left his ex-teammate and friend Mark Sanchez staring at the writing on the wall.

"I think he doesn't like the fact those moves were made," Keller said."I don't think those were things that made him happy. Could it possibly have been something that pushed him? Maybe, I'm not quite sure. But it definitely lit a fire underneath him. I've talked to him a couple of times this offseason and he's been working. So, I think you can expect some good things from him."

For the better part of four seasons, Keller operated as Sanchez's security blanket, a reliable target among a musical chairs-type of supporting cast. With that in mind, it's no surprise that, unlike countless others, he's throwing his support behind the oft-criticized quarterback.

However, you have to believe Keller is glad that bailing out Sanchez -- on or off-the-field -- is no longer a regular responsibility of his.
