Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd had a very productive career in college. He is drawing a lot of interest from teams in the top half of the first round, and the Eagles decided to check him out for themselves last week.

At 6-3, 220 pounds, one of Floyd’s biggest assets is his size. He can be a very physical receiver and has the ability to go up for jump balls and haul them in. At the same time, he has had a lot of success running slants and other immediate routes.

Floyd really seems to strive against zone coverage. He easily locates holes in the secondary and has the ability to put himself in the right place to make a reception. His size also allows him to play well against press coverage and get off defenders quickly who try to jam him.

Some scouts have concern around Floyd’s speed. He doesn’t have the best top-end speed, but he plays a lot faster than many are willing to give him credit for. Floyd has great quickness for his size that he uses to get off the line, particularly on the quick hitting routes that he has had a lot of success with.

The only other area of concern with Floyd is the off the field issues he went through while attending Notre Dame. He was charged for a DUI in 2010 and also for underage drinking the year before that. This caused Notre Dame to suspend Floyd during summer practices.

These seem to be some immature decisions that he made and he seemed to be more focused in his senior season. With the amount of talent he has, I don’t think this will be a big factor for teams who are considering drafting Floyd.

As far as the Eagles having interest in Floyd, it doesn’t really seem to add up. I’m sure they think he’s a very gifted player, but the team has a lot greater needs to address in the first round. They have a lot of talent at wide receiver on their current roster and will have that talent for a number of years.

I really like Floyd and I think he’s going to be very successful wherever he goes. I think he would be a great addition in Philadelphia with his ability to play the slot as well as the threat he would provide in the red zone.

At the end of the day, I don’t think the Eagles will go for Floyd. As I mentioned, he’s a great talent but there are just more pressing needs.
