Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

Torrey Smith and the Philadephia Eagles are at the top of the football world following an upset win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII Sunday night.

Smith caught five passes for 49 yards in the 41-33 win. It’s the second Super Bowl title of Smith’s otherwise up-and-down NFL career.

As someone who has not shied from putting his opinion out there regarding the events of the day and politics, one of Smith’s first tweets following the win was to throw some light shade in the direction of those who support President Donald Trump.

To be clear, this wasn’t without him being provoked. As has been the case with most outspoken athletes during this divisive time, Smith has received some pretty harsh tweets in the past.

In a surprising turn of events, most who responded to this tweet were in support of Smith. Even those who stand by President Trump.

Though some Patriots players did forgo the event last year, we’re bound to see and hear a whole bunch more about who might decide against visiting Trump at the White House this time around. Obviously, that list includes Smith. It also includes the likes of Chris Long and Malcolm Jenkins, both of whom have involved themselves a great deal in the politics of today.

Whether this means Trump decides not to invite the Eagles remains to be seen. After the NBA champion Golden State Warriors opted not to meet with him, Trump disinvited the entire team in response, despite the fact that they weren't planning on going anyway. We could be looking at something like that here.

Even after winning the Super Bowl, Philadelphia is taking a back seat to New England in popularity. It comes in No. 2 behind the Patriots in the SNIPdaily franchise top 100 for Monday.

That’s surely a sign that people are talking more about the Patriots’ loss than Philadelphia’s win. But as we go from on-field performance to the potential of politics taking over the news cycle surrounding these Eagles, that will likely change.

Such is the nature of a beast in what has unfortunately become a more politicized sports landscape. Support him or not, Smith’s comments Monday magnify this to a T.
