The Philadelphia Eagles signed free agent Offensive Tackle Demetress Bell today to a 5-year deal. Bell will replace Pro Bowler Jason Peters, who suffered a ruptured Achilles' Tendon and is likely lost for the season.

Losing Jason Peters was apparently not something that the Philadelphia Eagles and coach Andy Reid were ok with. Peters, the All Pro left tackle, ruptured his Achilles’ tendon last week and is probably lost for the season.  To fill the void of losing him, the Eagles signed former Buffalo Bill, Demetress Bell to a 5-year deal, the team announced today. Bell has visited with the team over the weekend, but was also being pursued by other teams.

“Demetress was one of the top free agent offensive linemen available this year and we are happy to be able to add him to our squad. We had a chance to meet him over the weekend and study him extensively on tape and we came away quite impressed with what we saw and heard. He’s a great athlete.” -Statement from Eagles head coach Andy Reid

The 5 year part of this is interesting, considering the Eagles do expect Jason Peters to return at some point.  I will chalk this up to the price of doing business.  Since Demetress Bell was reportedly courted by the Redskins, Packers and Steelers, the Eagles probably had to give him more than they were would probably have wanted to… the price of doing business.  Official terms of the deal have not been released yet, but it’s probably safe to speculate that the deal will be front loaded for Bell.

Bell is 27 years old and is 6’5″ 311 pounds.  He played college ball for Northwestern and was drafted by the Bills in 2008.  In Bell, the Eagles get a very solid replacement for Peters.  He is a veteran presence who can come in and start from day one.  This was undoubtedly the smartest move for the team to make.

Ironically, according to Ruben Frank of CSNPhilly.com, Demetress Bell also replaced Jason Peters in Buffalo after Peters joined the Eagles. On a side note, Bell took the opportunity to correct everyone’s spelling and pronunciation of his name.  Most had been going with Demetrius, but I have also seen Demetrious.
