Eagles hire Billy Davis to lead defense
The Philadelphia Eagles, under owner Jeffrey Lurie, have always conducted business as if they were at a friendly weekend poker game with the boys. They make you think they’re going in one direction, then out of nowhere, they hit you with a hiring that they deem a “Royal Flush.” It happened in 1999 with Andy Reid and again today with the hiring of Cleveland Browns LB coach Billy Davis as defensive coordinator, according to numerous sources.
Davis reportedly will install a 3-4 scheme to a unit whose personnel is suited to running a 4-3. The good news is that Davis has been a DC in the NFL running the 3-4, first with the San Francisco 49ers in 2005 to 2006, but that team was coached by defensive-minded Mike Nolan, so it’s hard to determine how much autonomy he had over the play calling.
